Recommended Firewall Connection?
Does anyone have a recommendation on firewall penetration connectors? Sorry, I'm at a loss for a formal name. What I'm looking for is some sort of weather element proof connection that would work for connecting harness connections between the ECU and the firewall and likewise on the engine side. Ideally, something with a bunch of pins that could be added on to as needed. So, I'm looking for 15-20 pin sort of connection that is stout and made for this sort of application- rather than cutting / drilling a hole / penetration, installing a grommet, then realizing I need a second, third, ...down the line. I'm on the verge of going to an aftermarket ECU and learning that there will be a few connections that will be needed that are not in the stock wiring harness and rather than punching a bunch of holes...
I'm thinking of using something like an amphenol mil spec connection that has strain reliefs, just not sure if anyone has tried this sort of thing for automotive or if there is a good equivalent? Here's a pic of a harness end of a amphenol connection: http://media.rs-online.com/t_large/F4422050-01.jpg Thoughts? |
Search for automotive/motorsport bulkhead connectors. I have used Deutsch DTM ones in the past for a project, but they are not exactly cheap.

Whatever the ones DIYAT sells are super cheap, but they're enormous and I dont think theres a large enough spot on the miata firewall to use them unless you have no abs or no brake booster.

I ended up ordering this one:
22 Pin Billet Wire Management Plug Kit with Black Loom || Keep It Clean Wiring Way more money ($90) than I wanted to spend, but exactly what I was envisioning using. I don't think I'll need 22 pins, but allows for a lot of extra options. Funny part is I may end up needing a box of sorts to wire smaller harness lines from. Location wise, I was thinking over on the passenger side, near the NA ECU location, back around the glove box area, leaving enough room for my future catch can. |
The diy one is HUGE, has a very small number of pins (22?) and is made of plastic, which may become brittle over time and break off. I would only put an aluminum or stainless connector, which are really expensive btw.

Amphenol connectors would work well.
