Stand alone suggestions for Kia Fe3 swap.

Im in the planning/ prep stages of a fe3 swap on a 91 miata. I have thought about using the factory 1.6 ecu/ harness or possibly the kia fe3 setup. However, I feel the best option would be a stand alone of some sort with plans for a turbo setup already underway. What would be your best ( read cost effective ) suggestion? Thanks,

Kirt

hahah. obviously I figured megasquirt would be the overwhelming suggestion. I was looking more for specifics. As in what version with what added to it. Havent been around megasquirt since v1 was out years ago and that was fuel only for me. Things have greatly improved since then. Am I right to assume ms3 would be best for this? What benefits does it have over and older system?

MS3X would be the easiest to build and is the most future proof.

Ms3x

Also found this chart, didnt know if it would be a help to anyone in the same boat as me. http://ms3efi.com/feature-xref.html

wasnt there somebody in the miata community that was also doing pre-modded, pre assembled ms3s? Cost unassembled vs assembled is pretty drastic. Worth the cost?

Kirt

Also would you guys also agree that getting the ms3 working in the kia is most advisable before doing the swap. I have a running driving sportage that I could install and tune on before the actual swap takes place.

Braineack 05-20-2012 06:39 PM

There's really not much to it. The ms3x would be simple.

cypres 05-21-2012 01:21 AM

agreed. all the almost everything is now controlled by the ms3x board. digging into some old treads, google results.

you need to solder a whole ONE wire on MS3 board when doing a MS3X build.
compared to like, 10, for an MS2 build.

is westfield's build thread http://westfieldmx5.devocht.com/megasquirt/90-97-ms3/ still correct and up to date?

Braineack 05-21-2012 08:51 AM

yep.

populate the board with the componet map on his site.

add the VR-with pullup mod. run a jmper form s12c to js9. and the rest is in the harness to the expander.

what are the crank/cam signals on that motor? uses the same CAS as the miata?

cypres 05-21-2012 06:41 PM

It has a cas setup similar to the 1.6 but also has a crank pickup in the bellhousing with a magnetic trigger on the flywheel. I can either make a hybrid setup using the cas from both motors and run the fe3 off the factory 1.6 ecu/ harness (or megasquirt setup for a 1.6) or alternatively I can drill a whole in the trans to mount the crank pickup. I have also thought about maybe just adding a 36-1 wheel and running edis or something. Seems the easiest thus far is just drilling for the crank pickup.

Braineack 05-21-2012 06:45 PM

36-1 wheel or alike would be easiest. Mod cas for 1 tooth to give tdc location then mod harnesss for seq spark and fuel. Easy peasy

honestly I'd go with AEM ems 4 over the ms3x. The cost between the two is around 78 dollars difference and the AEM integrates with their other stuff.

cypres 05-23-2012 04:57 AM

are you basing that cost on a assembled unit?

IMO cost effective would be picking up an assembled MS1 or MiataLINK from somebody's upgrade. You're looking at 200-300 for something that is ready to wire in.

Braineack 05-23-2012 08:54 AM

rob are you using a miata CAS on your FE3?

cypres 05-23-2012 10:14 PM

I believe he is using the mazda cas with redrilled disc; Or at least he was, I think. The most cost effective thing would be to run the motor on the factory 1.6 mazda ecu with larger fuel injectors, or use the factory kia ecu and air shrouded injectors. I have thought about doing this for the time being and getting all the bugs worked out. Then swapping ms3+x along with the turbo setup in a month or so. Have to be careful with my spending a little bit til I find out what going on with my ever slowing job.
