What's a better way to do it? Keep it closer to the water pump? I guess flow would be more important than temperature, right? I really have no idea what I'm doing, advise is greatly appreciated.

We should get off of Rafa's thread with this commentary. Your drawing has the turbo getting and returning water from two places of nearly equal potential pressure, meaning little or no flow. I hate to do this, but I am going to refer you to a thread called "Peter Pan Coolant Re-Route" where all of this was discussed ad-nauseum and a great deal of good info and diagrams exist. Ignore the ideas of Peter Pan himself (also called Hyper), because he is an idiot, but the others did a good job of explaining the various nuances of the cooling system. https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/t29112/

Further discussion should be off of Rafa's thread. Make a new thread or PM me if you have questions after reading it.

^ Actually, I'd say Rafa should make his own thread, as Rob started this to point out a great OEM part as a potential reroute part

Thanks for the tips guys, makes more sense now. I'll let you know when/if I manage to get this thermostat in and how it goes.

Just received my thermostat in the mail. FWIW, all 3 hoses are 1.25 inches in diameter. I've still got to collect some more parts before it's ready to install, but hopefully it all goes well.

He uses hypers smart coolant, it knows which way to flow for optimum cooling. How? That's a secret.

Some great info in here. Many thanks!
I hope to be able to put my reroute together soon for you all to criticize.

I was asking when I posted that route. This is the first reroute thread I'd been involved in and at the time I was thinking about what I wanted the coolant to do, not what physics wanted the coolant to do. People posted, pointing out my error, and I accepted it and thanked them for their assistance. I don't know what more you want from me, but if I've offended you by posting I'm sorry.

I'll install mine tomorrow morning. I will bypass the heatercore and followiing Joe's advice; I'll use the heatercore outlet to plug to the mixing manifold.

I'm gonna be using my heater core, I've gotta figure out how to route this thing. I know I'm gonna need a Protege coolant neck, but am I gonna need anything else, like one of those lame spacers or what?

No spacer needed, you'll just have to find a spot to stick your CLT sensor someplace pre-thermostat.

I was thinking about this earlier, I think it would require less plumbing (and nothing on the hotside) and would still achieve the same goal. Thoughts?

Yeah, if you don't need a heater core, that's a winner.

Why disregard the outlet to the mixing manifold?

I'm starting mine in 1 hour. I don't see the benefits of deleting that part.

It isn't disregarded. In the above picture, it's illustrated as joining the lower radiator hose instead of explicitly going into the mixing manifold, but it's essentially the same thing. The difference is that by relocating the thermostat to the front, you don't need to run a hose forward along the hotside to feed into the mixing manifold, you just run it across the front.
