Default 01 block 99 head gasket verification

So I just wanted to verify my logic before I throw this motor back together. I have an odd combination in my car: 01 block + 99 head.

Yanked the motor due to leaky rear main, but there is a coolant leak at the headgasket. Its on the intake manifold side towards the rear. So I'm doing a full gasket refresh.

Now, everyone and their mother uses the 99-00 head on their older BP blocks. Or they use the 01+ vvt head. But doing a quick search I didn't find anyone with an 01 block 99 head.

Since Mazda re-designed the water ports on the 01+ engines, I'm a little confused on whether I should use the 99 headgasket that I have for it since I have a 99 head, or the 01+ headgasket since I have the 01 block.

Basically my question: did the block change at all for 01 to accommodate the new cooling ports in the head? Or am I overthinking this?

Thanx

The real question is do you have a coolant reroute?

01+ gasket without reroute
Older gasket with reroute

Sorry for posting without pictures of two blocks and two gaskets side by side, but altering the water passages in the block would be a much bigger undertaking than just changing the gasket.

Since the advice is to use a 99-00 head gasket when doing a coolant reroute on a 01 engine, there "can" be no coolant passage difference in the block (which i guess use the same casting for all BPs).
With a re-route, go with the 99-00 gasket, without one use the band-aid 01-05 gasket.

Edit: too slow...

Edit2: and misleading, see Jasons posts further down

No re-route.
Guess I'll be looking for an 01+ gasket then.

Thanx guys

BIG MISTAKE!!!!

The 01+ gasket on a 99/00 head is a DISASTER.
The 99 head has fewer coolant holes than the 01+ head.
The 01+ gasket has fewer holes than the 99 head.
The blanked off hose do not match.
The blocks are the same.
When the 01+ gasket is mated with the 99/00 head, the few(er) head and gasket holes do NOT match up.
You will end up with fewer functioning holes than with the 99 gasket

The ONLY time an 01 gasket is recommended, is on an 01 head that doesn't have a reroute.

Here's the entire discussion:

Wait, so you're saying I SHOULD use it without the re-route or shouldn't?

My car does not have the re-route.

01 gasket on 99 head = disaster.
Doesn't matter if you have a reroute.

I will repeat.

The (reduced) holes in the 01 head gasket, DO NOT (all) line up with the (reduced) holes in the 99 head. You will end up with fewer functional coolant holes than either.

Thank you Jason. Just read through that whole thread.

Now I wonder about Post#2 and #3 and what prompted the exact opposite replies from yours. Unless they were only referring to the "gasket coolant re-route" mazda did to address the hotter running #4 from poor cooling system RWD compatability.

My main concern is the coolant leak from the side of the engine. I bought the car like this, and currently has the 94-00 gasket in there. I want to make sure the 94-00 gasket in there now is not the reason for the coolant leak.

I'm guessing this is unrelated to the gasket dilemma then? Its got ARP bolts, the head is nearly brand new (completely rebuilt) and hte 01 block is fresh as well (low miles) and yet it had a couple drops of coolant every morning under the car. Looking at the motor (its out of the car now) you can CLEARLY see that it was coming from the head gasket. Total mileage on freshly assembled motor is about 200 miles.

Just don't want to repeat any mistakes previous shop did.
And I dont want any leaks. At all.

The early part of the thread was the early part of the investigation. Some wrong conclusions.

Uh, is reroute with 01+ head and 01+ gasket a disaster?

Take my post #3 as some logic rambling about there is no change in the block. I know that the 01 head is a different casting, but I did not know that they change the coolant passages (I just guessed that they band-aided it with the gasket).

It's always wise to read the threads all the way through, since facts usually "mature" a bit down, before the thread takes of in a completely unrelated direction...

I'm glad you guys cleared it up, I was a bit confused. Then Jason removed all doubt with the last post: 94-00 gasket it is then. Kinda happy about that too since that's the one I already bought and now wont need to buy another one.

Yes it is. You should be using the 94-00 if you have a reroute.

Here is the thread on m.net that has all the pictures and information about different heads and head gaskets.

It appears that the front of the head will not get enough cooling. But I don't know for certain.

Great information, wish I had read it prior to first build.
So for my rebuild I need a 99 headgasket for my 01 block and head that has a reroute.

Any problem ordering a 99 gasket set from Mazda for my 01, any gaskets that will not fit ? exhaust, intake.

Head gasket, intake cam seal and valve cover gasket are different from 99 to 01.
