01 block, 99 head, supertech valve springs/retainers with 97 ECU?
Hi everyone,
In my search for a motor to replace the blown one in my 97 NA, I came across someone selling their motor for a decent deal. I just wanted to verify as to whether or not the motor would work okay with my 97 ECU for track use. 2001+ bottom end 99-00 head Supertech valve springs/retainers From my understanding this set has significantly higher compression and head flow than the 94-97 motor that requires at least premium fuel. I wouldn't have a problem with that, however before I go forth and purchase it do you guys think the motor can be safely put in my NA and run reliably on the track using the stock 97 ECU? What would be the downsides of doing so and what are some things you'd recommend looking out for? If its not a good idea, I have no problem waiting around for a simple 94-97 or 99-00 replacement. Thanks in advance, -Kris |
It will run like shit and probably detonate.

I understand that the NB 1.8 engines do have higher compression ratios than the NA engines. However, I would think that the OP could dial back the base timing a few degrees if he doesn't have a standalone ECU or other method to control the timing. That being said, I haven't researched the OEM 97 timing curve... I went straight to a 03+ VVT engine + MS3X by Reverant in my 97, which works great. |

Would that be from the 97 OEM ECU tuning (ie timing curve)? Or does that bottom end/head combo result in abnormally high compression ratio?
the ecu is the problem |
So the ECUs timing is shitty? What if a 99 engine with 9.5:1 CR?
What about with the 1.6s that run 9.5 CR? Reason I ask is because I'm putting a BP4W into my NA6, ECU is on the cards but not quite yet. |
