01+ Coolant reroute question

Hey guys, I have tried searching this for about a week with only tidbits of information for the 01+, most of it refers to older miatas.

Someone posted that the 01+'s have a different head gasket and that doing a reroute would not be beneficial for them. I was looking to do some cooling mods (got fans, rad, and silicone hoses on the way), and was wondering if I should do the re-route.

I've been looking at them online (Begi's and M tuned sold by FM) just plainly says it's for all miatas, hence the confusion

AFAIK, the head gasket has not been replaced on my car. The previous owner never had it replaced either, but I don't know if the owner prior to him did (I'm the third owner of the car). I also was able to confirm that 01-05 head gaskets do differ from previous miatas, but that doesn't confirm that mazda changed the head gasket design for the sole reason to change how coolant mixes in the block.

Just for the record mine is an 03.

we JUST discussed this

your search skills suck, try harder

you'll need the 99-00 head gasket to do a proper rear exit coolant reroute

Really? I've been doing some reading on the first page that dealt with overheating...maybe we need to work on my search skills then.

Anyway, glad that you confirmed it then, no need for a reroute at the moment.

Yea it's that little "x" in the upper right corner (if you are using winblowz)

There's always the lesser known "like" button Alt+F4 :)

For you OP. All you need to know about 01+ coolant reroutes.

In the bottom right of each post are props which you can either give a +1 or -1 to people. That is the closest things to likes.

There is a big long thread on miata.net in the performance section where we talked about the head gasket differences in detail. I think the thread is 3 or 4 years old now. I would start searching there.

The TL: DR is that for the coolant reroute to be the most effective on a VVT motor, you want the 94-00 head gasket.

Thanks for the help. I think when the time comes, I'll probably move to the 94-00 gasket along with reroute.

Heck, I'll probably just save a bit more to do it all at once, including timing, water pump and seals all at once.

In the meantime, more searching!

Just for an update, today I drove from Waco to Killeen (about 45 mins to an hour), this morning it was about 70 degrees or so today. Drove back at 4000 RPMS (about eighty), I had the A/C with on full tilt (and I had to turn the eyeballs away), and the temp was about 213.1, but really leveled off at 212.

So I'm sure it's not a head gasket issue.

I have added a second coolant temp sensor to see the deltas, I'll report my findings after the next track day in my build thread. I'm using an MSM head so it is the same coolant flow wise as yours.

ihiryu 08-18-2013 01:26 PM

Sounds good, hows the temp around your area?

Some days it can be almost 50 deg C ambient, it gets crazy.
