1.6 or 1.8?

I tried to STFA but kept getting errors.

I currently have a 1.6L w/ a homebrew setup. It's pretty ghetto but I'm in the process of sorting it and part of the process is deciding on what I'm going to do for tuning. I've decided on the MS PnP, yet I'm hesitant to purchase one because I'm not sure if I'm going to stick with the 1.6L.

Are the advantages/benefits, if any, of swapping in a 1.8L worth the added cost?

youll still use the MSPNP9093 even with a 1.8L if you ever decide to swap one in.

Then why are the 9495 and 9697 $25 more if they're interchangeable?

Cost is minimal...an I regret not doing it when I had the chance.

Only good thing about the 1.6L is that people practically give them away...so if you never plan on building a motor you will always have cheap backups/swaps.

And MS will control either one equally...your harness stays the same.

Any real power differences? More torque? I realize it's a fifth of a liter larger so there's got to be obvious advantages but are they worth scrapping my 1.6L for?

I wouldn't know...but everyone else says so and dyno plots don't lie.

You generally see 20whp more...and a little better spool.

Considering I spend a considerable amount of time, effort, research and money on some mods that only give me 5-10 more horsepower, it seems kinda dumb to pass up free bolt in horsepower when you have to swap a motor anyways.

This becomes even more true when you start thinking about building a motor, as I did recently. Sure I can build the mouse motor...but there's more ROI with the later motor, especially when you consider the '99-00 head only fits a 1.8L block.

What are your goals? If you already have a full turbo setup for the 1.6, I would just stay with that motor. If you don't have all the turbo bits, and your 1.6 is pretty bagged out, then yah, I would do a 1.8.

And think of the MSPNP units as being for the chassis, not for the motor. So if you have north american 1.6L miata (90-93), then you use need the 1.6L unit (because the wiring harness stays in the car whether you have a 1.6 or 1.8 in it. If you had a 94+ miata, you'd have to use the proper megasquirt for that chassis.

^^^other thing I meant to expound on...because I love the sound of my keyboard, and it makes my boss think I'm productive.

To me it's not enough to make it worth it once you've got an established setup. If you're thinking about a new turbo kit anyhow, or are where I was a year ago with a blown 1.6L and naturally aspirated...then upgrade.

I now have a setup I enjoy, with a spare CHRA on the shelf and a spare motor available...so I can't justify the expense of swapping and buying new turbo parts.

they aren't interchangeable, and they both have the 4-bar sensor over the 2.5bar
