1.6 rebuild stock or upgrade?
I'm about to put on a SR20 T25 on my 91 1.6 that has about 225k on it. The motor runs ok but has a rear main seal leaks (will have to replace the clutch anyway). So I would like to rebuild the motor just to refresh and clean it up.
Question is with a 225whp (about) goal with the car do I rebuild the motor to stock specs or get some better rods/pistons since I'm already taking the engine apart? |
Some would say save your money until you can get a 1.8, and realistically you should sell the 1.6 cheap as is, get a 1.8 and rebuld that with upgraded rods/pistons. But that route adds probably a lot more downtime and the added expense of the conversion kit and different exhaust manifold. It's an intensely personal choice.

just swap in a good used 1.6 and go

Your power goals don't necessitate forged internals. |
Purty much what I wanted to hear from you guys. I have a few cars so downtime is not that big of a deal but I guess a stock rebuild or motor with less miles on it would not be a bad idea.
I wouldn't mind doing the 1.8 but already have the 1.6 manifold/DP. |
