1.8 build need alittle direction on begining.

Hello guys, i have 1990 miata with the 1.6 i will be driving daily. I recieved a 1.8 with gasket set and 1.8 conversion kit from flying miata with the car. my plans r driving the car with the 1.6 and building the 1.8 to be turbo and to make about 200 - 225 whp. So far i have been reading i dont need upgraded internals until about 250ish whp. Any opinions on parts need for my rebuild or should i jus go back stock internals with new parts. Thanks guys i have been serching for a day or two and trying to find a starting point in my project. I am new to turbo and engine rebuilds but i am ready to get started. I love the Miata so far it is a blast to drive. I can provied pics if necesary.

Questions like this are asked every week, search around some more and decide for yourself what you want to put into this.

Garret t25 = instant spool. That's the turbo i'm going with. With meth i'm hoping to make power right in your range

PrimeMiata 05-31-2011 02:05 PM

Do u plan on running stock internals? 200-225 whp is my max goal but realisticly im lookin for rite at 200 or a little bit less lol. Wanting a sporty daily car but if i could find sum miata track buddys in my area that would be fun to.

PrimeMiata 05-31-2011 02:16 PM

i juss ran across this on craiglsist jus now lol. Its got me thankin supercharger on my 1.6 in the meantime building the 1.8 for turbo on the side. WQould this be a good buy for the price or 800? seems like a steal but ive never run a supercharger.

I'm staying stock internals, block, head, trans, and diff. I'm on a budget and I only want a quick daily that I can take to auto-x.

If you get a turbo kit together, buy a megasquirt, and install everything properly, you'll be fine.

edit: stay away from that sc

PrimeMiata 05-31-2011 02:26 PM

Souds much like budget build i want. lol ok will do i will stay clear of that sc unit lol. I will check into that kit and see what its about. My 90 miat been down for a few days the upper thermosat housing cracked in half when i removed it to change thermostat on the 1.6 in the car now lol. Had to go to dealership to order lol. I gave up my n/a 300zx for this miata.

Look kid you pay to play!!! if you want something worth it in the end spend the coin now so your not doing a job twice and wasting money and do some serious research because your going to put out alot of money down now that is not need right now! Trust me dont learn the hard way!!!!

225hp I'd just keep a stock 1.6. Sell the conversion to finance the mods on it.

do searches on here as well as dogpile or google
1.6 rebuild ,1.8 rebuild
rebuild miata 1.8 miata 1.6
things such as this will help you with info

The basic build is as follows. Add or take away at your pleasure.

- M-tuned rods w/ ARP2000 bolts
- ACL Race Bearings or Clevite Tri-Metal, I am running Maruha F112 which are basically Clevite
- Supertech pistons (also running these)
- Boundary oil pump gears
- Clutch (inexpensive option would be the Fm1 from flyin' miata)
- Stock head gasket + ARP head studs

That covers most of it. If you think you may want more power in the future, think about ARP Main studs as well (find Sav's thread on the broken main caps).

Anybody got any hot tips on where to pick a new up and any must have parts that should be replaced on the kit for reliabiaty? Thanks for all the replys guys i am learning tons of information from this site. My car is down for the moment i got a injector leak. Im waiting on new orings to run her agin.

Get this or this for your fuel and ignition control.
Either of those are more important than bolting on a turbo kit in my opinion.

Get this if you want your car to drive longer than 4 weeks at a time when compared to a GReddy kit.

But before you get any further read the stickies in these forums, all your questions so far would have been answered there.

PrimeMiata 06-06-2011 11:46 PM

Thank you for your input. I will go over sticies agin. Jus trin to decide which low budget starter kit is better to upgrade over time. I would like to make a turbo kit purchase next week to get me motivated. Then make sure i have good fuel and ignition contol be fore i actually bolt it up.

PrimeMiata 06-07-2011 12:32 AM

Srry fo this double post but i am torn between Greddy kit and Shanghai-S Turbo System . I keep readin dozens of post on both basic setups. Both are in my price range. Jus looking for relaibilty out of the box and upgradable later on.
