190 HP or 255 for now + future?

Hey guys, I know it's commonly suggested to go with the Walbro 190 lph High Pressure fuel pump over the 255 lph unit for most of our turbo applications.

I have noticed though, that some V8 guys are using the 255.

I am trying to plan ahead and set the car up now with things as I replace them that will not only work right now with my current set up but that will also be approcpriate for a V8 setup within the next couple years...

What is the downside of the 255 that makes the 190 recommendable over it usually, and should I get that if I plan to do a V8 swap in the future or can the 190 handle those needs?

Thanks
-Ryan

255 will overpower the fuel pressure regulator on the rail causing rail pressure to run high and motor to run rich.

A 255 and a decent aeromotive rising rate should do the trick then. But then you are into replacing all of the lines etc. etc.

Are you referring to the rising rate fpr for the V8? Currently I control fuel with 460cc injectors and megasquirt, so no need for one of those. And, I was under the impression that if one swapped in a stock V8 the simplest solution is to use the appropriate ECU from the same car as the motor came from - then you don't need a FPR?

So what I've gathered so far is that while the 255 would be good for a V8, it's no bueno for the 1.6 fuel system.

190 HP then?

Didn't notice you are running MS. You should be able to compensate for the extra pressure the injectors are seeing by reducing the duty cycle. Put the 255 in if you want it later for the V8. You will just need to re-tune the MS until then.

Get a bosch 044 and be done for life. Unless you are gonna see over 600hp. In that case, run two.

are the 255's louder than stock? i hear some vids on youtube and they are screaming away... then some others you cant hear... im thinking maybe some people mount them without the foam sock and some do, or maybe its the cameras they use... i dont know lol....

I have a striped caged car and can hear my 190. Its defiantly not quiet.

Odd question, but what if you added a resistor inline with the wiring to lower voltage to the pump? When you swap to the different engine or run a better regulator, you could remove the resistor to give the pump full voltage.

I've run this regulator for YEARS with a 255 with much success. You can adjust the fuel pressure down to 10-15psi, or as high as 90psi (great for testing fuel fittings). It holds the pressure rock steady with the engine off and a charger on the car to give the system the full 13.5+ volts. Set mine at 40psi on the LS probably 8 months ago and to this day (well, last month when I started the car) it holds dead steady at 40psi.

P.S.- My GSS340 screams like a whipple.... Very annoying

Yes it is quite loud. I have a full interior and can hear it whining away. Sometimes it's louder than other times. And mine has the sock. Get the Bosch!!!! Or actually, I'll get the bosch and you can buy my 255HP :)

Note that if you do lower the voltage the flow capacity of the pump will be reduced.

my 255 is so freaking loud I can't even describe it, but it's the only pump that's held up to my ridiculous fuel pressures.

My 255HP is not silent, but nowhere near as loud as some of you guys say yours are. Definitely doesn't bother me much

are the ones on ebay any good? there is one guy selling a TON of pumps for like 55 bucks each +shipping... i was thinking of getting one of those.... any good? or crap?

They have knockoffs on ebay so watch out. I have a 2004 msm with a walbro 255 off ebay and I paid like 80 I think. Its been installed for about six months and no problems yet its louder then stock but nothing that I get irritated from. My cars running pretty rich just because I have 321cc injectors and a walbro 255 ;). I would go with the 255lph

sasquatch 02-16-2011 06:45 PM

sweet, the fuel pump is one of the last parts i need for my fuel system... i have everything else exept for bigger lines... i dont think ill have any pressure problems, i got a aeromotive FPR and 6AN lines in the engine bay, just missing the 6AN lines under the car...

dynokiller90 02-20-2011 08:37 PM

Aeromotive FTW!

well in light of this thread my 255 finally finally shit the bed. so it was time for a suitable replacement. and stumbled across the new 340 stealth in tank pumps from Aeromotive. here is a link.

check out the flow chart. even at 90 psi it's still crankin out 200lph
more than enough for most of our needs and super quiet. can barely hear it prime and then nothin once the car is running. even when the pressure is up in the 90s there is no sign of it, just gobs of flow. thought some of you might like to hear about a quiet alternative that out performs the old standard. it even fits with little effort into the stock cradle. definitely cant say that about the walbro 255. had to scale back my ve tables quite a bit. any way if it holds up to my abuse or blows up, I'll post some long term thoughts. so far I'm lovin it. I can actually hold a conversation without yelling in my car again.

magnamx-5 02-20-2011 09:22 PM

get some real injectors and turn the damn boost up you newb

dynokiller90 02-20-2011 09:44 PM

newbe, lol. you've been here all of what? a year and six months longer than I? I've been running 14lbs on a stock bottom end for the last 6 years. granted my set up might be a little weird, but it works well and my injectors flow plenty espite their green top image.;)
