1zz-fe coils not fitting my 05 NB
 

Hello, well read the section where it has how to do the COP conversion so i decided to go for it.. Got the correct coils and clips but when i went to slide them into the spark plug hole, they seem to have been too thick to fit.. Now i thought the only modification was to add bolt down things on the valve cover but do i also have to bore out the cover to fit the coils? or does this not work for the VVT NB?

Doesn't work for the VVT cars. You'll need to bore the holes and cut all of the mounting hardware off the coils.

Do you have a stock 05 with VVT or an 05 MazdaSpeed? If you have a VVT engine you need to bore out the 4 spark plug holes on the valve cover to make cops fit.

There are a few other COPs out there that are smaller diameter but their mounting tabs and igniters may be a problem...Could the stock 01+ COPs be modded, such that you pick up 2 more and put them in the other cylinders to run sequential???...smaller ones may be like some Audi/VW...anyone positive on their reliability or output? (Toyota ones I'm told can throw a spark like a lightning bolt haha)

Ah, well thank you my friends.. Bummed i thought this would be easy... but yeah its a stock 05 with vvt not Mazdaspeed... Dont have another extra cover to cut up so i dont wanna mess mine up.. wont have a car to drive lol.. Anyone know of a cop setup that will fit my engine?

Why do you want COPs so bad? The stock vvt coils are known good to at least 20 psi.

Dont want them "so bad", Im not going to do them after all.. WAnted to do them to make the engine look a bit cleaner but I know its not necessary so ima keep it the way it is... Thanks for the inputs... i learned something today lol

The 01 coils are actually weaker than 99 coils but they enjoy the advantage of shorter cables.

Don't sweat cutting up the valve cover. You just have to enlarge the holes to fit the coil shafts. Doesn't hurt anything.

But you will have to modify the coils where they sit at the top of the valve cover.

^^^I just got my newly powder-coated valve cover back :facepalm: so no grinding/boring for me.

*And if one wanted to run full sequential ignition, then could 2 more of the stock VVT Coils (~$60-$70 total) and place them on the currently "wired" plugs? Then just cap the outlets on each to "clean it up." Seem legit? I would imagine that 4 of them could fit?:dunno:

even powder coated, it's a relatively clean job to accomplish.

I'm not sure two more stock coils would fit.

So for the vvt engines... if i end up doing it... do i just wire them in or do i still need a resistor box of some sort for them to work?

Why not LS2 truck coils? More spark, just as cheap and no need to modify your valve cover...

Ls2? those dont look like they would work... But im not going to change anything just yet... ima just focus on my Handling for now...

Flyin' Miata makes it work all the time...

Its just a traditional coil pack that you mount somewhere and run plug wires to your plugs...just like every non-COP car or truck. The difference is:

1. You can run full sequential ignition (REQUIRES ENGINE MANAGEMENT), in which each coil/plug only sparks when it needs to for its cylinder, instead of wasting every other spark to an empty cylinder as ours do (wasted spark configuration - 2 coils, 4 plugs, coil ignites 2 plugs at once, one to a full compressed cylinder the other to an empty compressed cylinder, 1&4, 2&3).

2. More spark...they pack a punch, which is great for boosted cars.

Everyone loves the Toyota COP conversions because the coils have proven reliability (unlike most pre-2001 Miata coils), a higher-energy spark than stock coils, and you can run them in wasted spark configuration if you wire them to do so and will not need an ecu to control them (but that gets into issues with dwell time and burning them out if you don't lower it).

Best of luck with suspension though! My focus is the same right now.

Based on Faeflora's experience.

You can do an LS2 coil setup for about $115 total if you already have stock 90-00 spark plug wires. The only thing you have to trim is the rubber on the part of the spark plug wire that goes into the hole on the valve cover. It takes about 5min with a razor blade to trim all 4 enough to fit into the holes.
