2003 head on a 95 with MSPNP
 

I found a killer deal on a 2003 head today while picking up my block and shit to build, $200 good. I figure I could do a Mazdaspeed intake cam, and not worry about VVT, but my shitty mspnp still relies on my CAS, Can you do a crank wheel on a MSpnp so I could take advantage of this deal? Enlightnen my non electronic carb loving ass on this subject please.

If you can I imagine it will take some hardware mods as the VR circiut is separate from the hall effect circiut and needs jumpered on the board in standard megasquirts.

This is why i bought a Pnp because even though I can solder, i have no idea what that means.

Well my post is alittle vague because I don't know the PnP unit, I only know the traditional MS stuff. Best bet would be to contact matt or ben from DIY, they can probably walk you through it or mod it for you.

Otherwise I don't see why it wouldn't be feasable to use a crank wheel in place of the distributor on your setup.

Does the VVT head lose the hole for the CAS and use different blanks for the exhaust cam? I know for a fact the Mazdaspeed heads did not. It has the cap on the back of the head with a big plug where the CAS would normally sit, and the exhaust cam is still notched for the CAS as well.

The vvt head still has a hole for a cas. I would highly suggest just picking up the vvt tuner from diyautotune and using it in with the mspnp so that you can keep VVT.

When you picked up the head did you get the Valve cover and Oil Feed pipe for the VVT spool Valve?

As far as I know you cannot put in a mazdaspeed intake cam. The actual casting of the head is different and it will not fit. You have to run it with the VVT intake cam.

You can swap in you CAS and run it like that and just leave VVT disabled. I really do suggest that you pick up the VVT Tuner and wire it in with the NB cam and crank sensors. This way you can keep using your MSPNP and have VVT support.

MSI can't run the sensors from the 03. Upgrade it to an MSIII, or run the 95 CAS + DIY VVT Tuner.

I haven't picked it up yet, I would also have to source a valve cover. I am too worried about getting my shortblock together right now, it is probably the next couple of months kinda thing though. I would like to do VVT, so I will probably use the VVT controller. It would be nice if the kit for that were out. So I was mainly trying to figure out whether it was worth saving my lunch money for. It looks like a 03 head and VVT set up could be had for under 500 in my situation. Which seems good. I cant unfortunately jump on this right away. I have too much on my plate right now.

The hardest part is finding the valve cover and the oil spool lines. If you can find the lines and spool valve I have just a spare valve cover.

There is no reason to not just run with VVT disabled for now. It works fine, you will just loose a little mid range power.

So with the VVT disabled, it just locks it in one place right? Would these spool valves and lines be attached to the head already?

With VVT disabled the intake cam is just fully retarded at all points in time. The spool valve and oil line are not attached to the head. The line attaches to the block where the oil pressure gauge attaches to and then goes up and above the head and over the valve cover.

The silver pipe is the oil tube on the side of the engine.

^based off that pic it would be fairly simple to make your own line. That setup reminds me of ls vtec lmao.
