2005 Mazdaspeed MX5 Short Block Swap?

I agreed to help my nephew get a 2005 Mazdaspeed running that he bought. It has a seized motor. Currently 125k on the odometer. Anyway, he is of limited funds as so many people are these days. However, he has a good running 2000 NA 1.8 motor. Anyway, how does taking the turbo car's head to be freshened up at machine shop & swapping it along with all peripherals onto the NA short block sound to you? Is there something that will cause a problem?

Nope same short block.

MSM is really weird. NB1 (99-00) block and head, NB2 (01-05) intake manifold, oil pan, baffle, engine mounts, and coils. Then an awesome MSM specific intake cam, and the valve cover is nb1 with nb2 coil mounts and the MSM wrinkle red.

My car is a 99 with MSM intake cam and valve cover with VICs (nb1) intake manifold. Decent N/A setup if you don't have a vvt and/or vvt control.

you'll lose turbo oil feed from driver side of block

otherwise all should bolt up

curly 02-19-2016 07:29 PM

Oh yeah I guess the oil pan is half MSM specific.

yup. if you carried over everything, the only thing you'd lose is the dr side oil feed.

What do I need to do to plumb the oil supply line?

18psi 02-19-2016 07:44 PM

tee off from the oil pressure sensor on the pass side and run a custom oil feed line to the turbo like all the custom turbo guys

Chad Dunn 02-19-2016 07:47 PM

Ok. Got it.

Whats his name just came out with a badass fitting for doing that, and I have good luck with using 3an brake lines for turbo oil. Get a npt to 3an adapter and a ~42" long 3an brake line. Easy.

I looked and can't find it, it's bsp -> bsp so you can use the stock sender properly with a NPT port for whatever...

Remember to T properly, meaning account for engine vibration and think what would break if it vibrated too much.

Found it

The MSM head has the extra coolant passages like the VVT head though. Make sure you use the right head gasket.

I made the same swap and it worked just fine. I carried over the msm pan/windage tray and pick-up. I tee'd the oil from the sender as previously recommended. I used the msm water outlet tube as this had a stub for the turbo feed. I would not recommend using the msm intake manifold as the tumblers steal some power. I think that the 2000 motor is a little higher compression, but that hasn't been an issue so far in my swap (I use 12# boost). I didn't bother swapping the msm head or cam as the motor I used was low mileage. So far 3 seasons of track use and it just keeps ticking along.

I decided to take my time & rebuild original motor. This is a uncle/nephew job with my youngest nephew. So far he wants to upgrade internals & do a Garrett turbo setup. I like the Flyin' Miata package because of the fitment legwork being already done. However, the turbo stuff is going to be a long while. We are focusing on long block build first.

The VVT head didn't have any extra coolant passages. They just blocked off some of the ones in the front.

Thanks, good to know.

Right, it was the gasket that changed, not the actual head coolant passages.

So, Chad, you should post up some pics.
