91 escort to 99 miata swap- Crank Angle Sensor Help
I have a 99 with piston slap
I recently picked up a 1.8 out of a 91 escort GT My problem is the crank size difference, I need to use the trigger wheel from the 99 with the big nose on the 91 with a small nose. My only thought is to have the trigger wheel machined open to fit the back of the 91 pulley. Is there any other way i could maybe delete it? Or send it a false signal? Ive searched on this swap and found 2 people have attempted it and those threads are long long dead. before anyone says why not get a 93+ 1.8, I paid $200 for this motor with 80k in it. They did have 1 motor from a 94 miata with 160k on it and they wanted 1100 the other nearest pick and pull is a hour away. Any help is appreciated. |
Drive an hour. Why would you replace your engine with one that has inferior design built in?
shop around, you can find a much better price that that. |
They wanted more yet if I drove to the other. Regardless I have the motor and the trigger wheel is at the machinist. So far I'm $260 deep into this car.
How is the design inferior? Because of the short nose crank? |

Technically it'll make more cause the old one doesn't run! ;)
But if I felt the need for absolute power couldn't I just swap heads? I'm going for having a running car on the cheap so I can quit driving my turbo one to work. Still no input on the crank sensor? |
Swap head and swap crank?
Are the belts even the same? Doesn't the Escort use v-belts? --Ferdi |
It uses both. I have to use a 1.6 alternator pulley but I have to swap over cam gears from the 1.8 also I believe

is the head out of the 99 still in good shape? if so, just swap it
just use the block from the escort. everything else will be from the 99, as long as those parts aren't damaged since you're already turbo'ed, this would give a little drop in compression in the cylinders, so re-tune and turn up the boost. You'll even be able to clean up the bay a little by sourcing the oil supply from the correct side of the engine as the escort BP's have the oil source like the 94-95 miata BP's The only problem you'll run into is that the timing belt tensioner threads into the block on the intake side, don't exist, so get a big washer and a lock nut and you'll be good to go |
