Are 92-97 crank pulley assemblies the same?

Can anybody confirm this? I can't remember... :dunno:
thx!

Yes but no.... the 1.6 long nose can have a 1.8 crank pulley bolt to it. However, one of the local guys with a 1.8 transplant was trying to install a 6-rib SC, and the sc pulleys didn't fit into the crank pulley. Turns out the 1.8 had a 1.6 long nose pulley on it, which are different dimensions than the 1.8s.

However, you have to remember the alt belt on a 1.8 is a flat rib style, vs. the v-belt on the 1.6. So that's the bigger problem.

That said, supposedly a escort crank pulley is the same dimensions as the 1.8, but includes the v-belt... So I believe that was the solution to his issue.

If you are talkin' about the pulley boss (crank bolt goes through) then logic would say yes, given the above information, but I haven't tried that combo.....

meaning the width of the belt track on the pulley?

Just dug around the parts stored in the shed and found three alternators - two vbelts and one ribbed. Lucky me.

probably won't find one of those before the weekend

I need the entire assembly. I have a bad small nose 1.6 in the car and a good big nose 1.6 w/o the pulley assembly (gear only) to go in.

The pulley was a different "internal" diameter. So, it wouldn't accept the SC pulley to bolt inside on the 4 10mm bolts.

If you are going to run with the 1.8 ribbed... check the connections on the alt, they were supposedly different between the 1.6/1.8.

OK, so if you have a 1.8 pulley boss and crank pulley, I think you'll be fine.... But if you can get the escort one, it's one less thing to change (alt). <G>

I got a schooling from a local miata mechanic on all this, but forgot the details. ;) Basically, all the late 91+ crank pulleys will bolt up to the to all the 91+ cranks. Once the change went to ribbed accessories, you then have to contend with the axial (fore/aft) offset of the pulleys. So one is best off grabbing the entire pulley set from the same year crank pulley. I ended up with a 94 set, same as 95... and that offset changed in 96, same as 97.

The connections are the same I've got a 1995 alternator in my 92

the truth

So I got around to putting my 94 pulley on my 90 Vpulley alternator and didn't work. Why? Because the Vpulley alternators have a thinner shorter shaft - which means the 94 ribbed pulley has excessive tolerance at the bore, and the pulley shaft threads aren't exposed. That sounds so softcore. :giggle:
