Default 1.8 swap: noob question

if i'm MS, and planning on using the TB that came attached to my 2002 motor, all i should need as far as parts to do the swap into my 1993 chasis are the two motor mount brackets, and an EGR blockoff, correct?

Secondly, those brackets could just come from any 94-97 car. also correct?

I'll do this in list form
  • The brackets should be identical on any 1.8 block, and most likely same even on the 1.6 block.
  • Don't worry about EGR. I'm pretty sure if yo just leave the EGR solenoid in it's position unplugged, it will be closed. Worst case - use a sheet of alumium instead of EGR solenoid gasket.
  • You will need all the pigtails for all the sensors/valves sensors. Injectors are the same but just about everything else has a different connector (TB, IAC, so on).
  • For plug-and-play you will need the 1.8 throttle cable. 1.6 one will be too long.
  • As for sensors, you need to either use your old sensors or wire in the new ones into your engine harness. I did this, and it's a major pain because you have to solder while bent over in the engine bay.
  • TPS sensors only fit their respective throttle bodies - 1.6, 1.8 NA and 1.8 NB are all different.
  • Input mods for Megasquirt to use NB crank/cam sensors - I don't know, but these might be different too from NA CAS setups. That is, if you decide to use NB sensors (this is a idea, they are more accurate!)
  • VVT I don't even know

I am doing the samething soon. I was told the cas from our 1.6 will plop right in on the back of the exhaust cam. If you look back there it is just like the back of the intake cam on the 1.6 and u just remove the bar they have blocking it off and install our cas. (i have not done this yet so if i am wrong please say so).

VVT is controled by the 200 dollar box diy sells http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/v...7e836194ff7e69

I am very interested in if I need the egr block off plate and if I can use my existing mounts from my 1.6 so please report back if you try.

The flyn miata kit also notes some wire to extrend the cas. I am un sure if you could just use any wire and soldier it to extend but I figure you could.
I have a bmw vtps and am hoping it will plug in to the nb TB like it did the 1.6 but I dont know for sure.

One of my concern is the idle control. THe 1.6 is a one wire valve and the 01-05 1.8 is two wire so i am not sure how to conect it?

actually I was reading more one the diyautotune vvt controler and it says it

"This one also translates the NB crank and cam sensor signals into NA style signals, making it perfect for swapping the VVT head into earlier Miatas"

Savington posted in a thread over on Miata.net several months ago detailing this exact swap.
