99 maita oil pump replacement
 

My oil pump died on me today. Where exactly is the oil pump located, do i have to remove the oil pan?

Also is there a downloadable pdf service manual for a 99miata?

I dont know about a download, but the 94-97 manual should be able to hook up on the oil pump replacement. Maybe some kind person here has the 99 fac manual and would fax/scan you the pages. there are some super cool people here that will help you out. I just dont have the manual.

I would consider all of the other parts that will be coming off to get at the pump too. While its apart, ya know..

For general maintenance items like this, miata.net is usually a good place to search. A title search for oil pump over there reveals 138 threads... about a 20 of them ask this exact question.

The answer is yes, you must remove the oil pan. The even worse part is that in order to remove the pan, you must either #1: Raise the engine to make sufficient clearance (which means you need to remove the engine), or #2: Drop the front subframe.

The pump itself is located on the front of the engine inside the pan, and the pickup tube is connected to the pump. This is why you must completely remove the pan. Everything I've ever read about doing this indicates the easiest way to do it is to remove the engine... which means pulling the A/C, P/S, and really sucks.

While you've got the motor out, do a clutch job.

However, I must ask... how do you know the pump died? There are several very common culprits that cause the dash gauge to drop to zero, and pump failures are not very common. How have you diagnosed this pump failure?
