Advices sought on Cambshafts for NB1/NA build

Hi All,

I am building a DD motor that will also see track time for my 2000. I have the bottom end assembled and ready to go with 11:1 compression pistons.

Now I need to make some decisions on the head. I don't have the fund to go all out on the head. It will be a basic port and polish. However, I want to put in the biggest camshafts that will work with the stock valve train components.

Here are a couple of my questions:

1) How much valve lift can I run before I need to go SUB
2) Looks like webcams is the only outfit that offers reasonably priced cams for NB1s. Any other options? I have done a few searches and that is the conclusion that I came up. I am asking in case I missed something.

I ran a Webcam grind #222 which has a duration of 237 advertised, 214 @.050, and .370" lift. It is a very streetable cam, and I ran it using the stock valves and springs on a ported 95 head. I chose to run SUBs to squeeze a little more power out of it, but you do not need to with that cam.

I had to clearance the lifter holes for the intake cam to clear on the 95 head, but when I switched to the 99 head, it fit with no other modification. For my taste, I thought it was way too mild, but I did get the car to run pretty good with it.

I am not exactly sure what the limits are using the stock valvetrain. Webcam will guide you in the right direction as far as what components you will need for various grinds.

miata2fast,

Thanks for the detailed reply here. I talked to webcams yesterday. The gal I talked to seemed pretty knowledgeable. she did mention the 222 grind. The other suggestion was the 222/516 grind. The 516 has a little more lift .385" and duration at and 224@.05" than the 222.

Not sure if there is any down side to the longer duration on the exhaust side. I cannot think of any downside to it.

I like the fact that the 222 grind is streetable. I am leaning in that direction.

I'm really interested in a set of cams for a streetable naturally aspirated NB1 build also. Does webcams keep cores or do you have to send them yours? Do they use the stock base circle? There just doesn't seem to be much info out there about 99/00 BP cams.

The 222 is just the exhaust cam right? Did you run a webcam grind for the intake also?

I would stay away from the 222 grind. The 30 grind is real close @.050 but with much less overlap @.010

..............222.........30
@.010....275.......248
@.050....213.......216
.....Lift....366.......365

I started looking at the 222 before I chose my cams. After talking to Faith (I recommend her!) she pointed out how poor the ramps were on the 222 grind.

In you shoes I would do the 506 grind intake and exhaust. She said they had great luck with that grind on other 99 heads. 246@.010, 214 @.050 and .389 lift.

IMHO you want new valve springs with any of these. Supertech light doubles would be ideal. Trackspeed is where I got mine.

It would be nice if webcam showed more of their available cams on the website. When you do a search all that comes up is the 517/222 set-up.
