Alumalite Splitter/Undertray?

I'm looking for some materials for make an undertray (maybe splitter too), and i can't find a good local abs supplier, but there are tons of suppliers for these alumalite stuff.

Anyone played with this alumalite stuff before?

Laminators Inc. - Sign Panel Products: Alumalite Corrugated plastic core, double-sided aluminum for stability and strength

It's two thin aluminum sheets sandwiching a plastic matrix. I remember playing with a bar of aluminum/cardboard composite in college, and it's surprisingly stiff for it's weight. I wonder if this is the same kind of composite, but I can't find any engineering specs anywhere.

Locally, it's $85 for 1/4" 4'x8'.

I don't know if I would use it as is for a splitter, but it does make a perfect material to use as a core for a carbon one. Cut it to shape, seal the edges, lay some fabric and vaccum bag that shit. That's my plan anyway. not a bad price, but I've seen it slightly cheeper.

and why did you post this in the engine performance section?

Savington 04-06-2009 04:54 PM

'lay some fabric and vacuum bag that shit' = $200-300 in carbon, peel-ply, cotton weave, vacuum bag, chromate tape, resin, blahblahblahblah.

I was thinking undertray = better cooling efficiency, so i put it here.

that's not a bad idea, to use it as a core, and lay on some stiffer outer plates.

Sav I hear what you're sayin. my point was though, that by itself the stuff isn't rigid enough. I have some signs made from it, and you can easily fold it in half. But if you so desired to make a carbon or fiberglass splitter, it would make a perfect core material. much better than say balsa or something. and to keep cost down you could always do a wet layup. as for using it as undertray material. . . I think it might work pretty well as long as you can insulate the edges from exhaust heat. Maybe with some aluminium duct tape.

hustler 04-06-2009 06:03 PM

people in the know use carbon or plastic for splitters because if metal goes under the car, it takes other stuff with it.

hustler 04-06-2009 06:05 PM

btw, where the fuck do I get the plastic for shrouding? Fucking bullshit searching is ass-fucking me right now.

Zabac 04-06-2009 07:20 PM

I had a thread about the ABS source a while back, quick search it, maybe in the GB section.

Fuck it, here it is.

rippledabs 04-06-2009 07:25 PM

there are some online suppliers for abs plastics, but for anything bigger than 4x2 feet, shipping is $50+

Braineack 04-06-2009 07:39 PM

where can you find 4x2' though?

rippledabs 04-06-2009 07:51 PM

ePlastics will ship 2x4' for reasonable amount. The last quote that I got was $22 shipping for a 3/16" thick

Hustler if you are in Houston, Austin, SA (Plastic Supply of San Antonio is where I get mine), Dallas, even Shiner (Boedeker plastics) you should be able to find a local plastics supplier no problem. That way if you need a big sheet you do not get killed on shipping.

Doppelgänger 04-06-2009 11:12 PM

I would like to make an undertray out of that stuff... hmmm.

levnubhin 04-07-2009 09:24 AM

There's a place near me called Prospect Plastics. I don't know if they ship but they carry abs so it's worth a phone call.

Cool...right now I've abandoned the splitter idea and I want to just seal up the rad and make a belly pan so I can get the car on the track this year...its been 2-years since the last event. Besides, I'll need the top fuel wing before the splitter.

hustler 04-07-2009 09:36 AM
