Another VVT BP-Z3/VE/6D Camshaft thread
 

Hi, first time poster, lurked mainly (active on FB page)

I have a head with a head guy. Its getting the works, O/S valves, port, double springs etc...

Anyone have any real life experience with aftermarket cams on the VVT engine? I know there are a few companies (Marhua, Cat) that have camshafts available for these guys... I am considering going with some mild cam to help overall VE of my motor.
At what point is it necessary to run a shim under bucket or a shimless setup? Is there a cheap(er) alternative to the expensive road path if they are indeed needed?
Anyone have any laying around that they want to unload?

FWIW here's a graph of my current and head-lifting setup (416 whp, 2871 @ 19.5-20 pounds)

It is always difficult to say when the risk of spitting out shims gets high enough to swap to lashcaps under buckets.
It is often seen as a rabbit hole with 33mm base circle (I would prefer reground stock ones to stay with cast material and get ones for YOUR purpose), more lift, longer valves, dual springs....
In that mix SUBs are not that big part (especially if you have the head built).

Mild cams are a good choice if you're looking for a nice balance between performance and not going too extreme.

Now, about the shim under bucket or shimless setup, this really depends on the cam profile you choose. If you're going for cams with higher lifts, you might need to move to a shimless setup to ensure everything runs smoothly and maintains proper clearance. But if your cam upgrade is more on the mild side, you might not need to change your current setup. Best advice? Check with the cam manufacturer or a professional engine builder who can give you advice based on the specifics of your engine and the cams you're looking at.

For finding a more budget-friendly route, be cautious. Going cheap on parts that are crucial like these can end up costing more in the long run if they fail or don't perform well. However, when I have to deal with my turbo kit, I've found here best deals on diesel turbo kits. You can search on their website if they have smth you need, as they have great prices and original stuff.
