Arp main studs. Line hone or no ?
Seen several post recommend a line hone with arp main studs.
Ive seen several posts where people say you dont need a line hone and thier machinist checked the bores and said they are fine. Kinda curious how people feel about this now. As all the post im finding are from years back |
Its always ideal to have any boring done with the hardware in place and torqued. Is it required? It depends on how much you going to nit pick your engine. I've build a few engines with bored cylinders that didn't you a torque plate and never had an issue.

Its cheap and the right way to do it. You can also have them set your oil clearance while they do it.
Pro tip: have them also set oul clearance on the rods and balance the assembly. It's not needed but is cheap in the scheme of things and so worth it. |
Line boring is the right way to do this, but many people have gotten away with not doing it. So I think the answer is "it depends" and the only way to know is to try it.

It's either close enough to "true" or it isn't. Either it will eat main bearings or it won't. I prefer to have a pro measure it and make it right if necessary.

No to align boring and yes to align honing. I would detail up the caps & block and then torque the studs/caps with the arp lube. Then check the bores for shift, roundness and size. If their within .0005” run it. If it’s only out a little more I usually just lightly run the hone through to true it up. Half of the shops will ruin your block. Finding a competent shop is the hardest part.

Yeah one of my shops line honed it (probably bored it) and ended up getting about .002" too large. Totally screwed it up. Avoid it if possible. |
