Automotive Machine Shop in PDX?

Anybody on the list have a favorite shop in Portland, OR? I've got a bored out block that is suffering from cylinder taper (0.0009") that is slightly above factory spec. I'm hoping a re-hone of the walls can straighten things out.

Thanks,

J

In for recommendations.

Have you checked with AR Auto Service as to who they would recommend? I would trust their recommendation if they have one.

Try Dan Hall's machine shop. I've used them numerous times, however apparently Dan Hall himself passed away recently. So I'm not 100% they're even still around, but I'd still trust them with my head, it's not like he was doing everything.

Recently Kay2 on CR suggested Dan's cylinder head, but judging by the title, he may only do heads.

That being said, I'd honestly run the block with that much taper. As a former machinist myself, I'd have to double check that measurement a number of times before believing it. Hell, if you don't wipe down one side of cylinder wall as much as the other you'd have that taper.

Thanks guys. I tried Dan first, but after finding out he had passed I moved on. Gene at Bearing Services was sympathetic and thought he could help so I went with him. He took a crack at the taper by dwelling the hone towards the bottom and was able to straighten the bores to within factory specs. My worst bore is now 0.0006 in the transverse direction.

The good news, I have an acceptable block and it only cost an additional $87. The bad news, the JE pistons that came with the motor were never going to work. The piston to wall clearance was absurd to begin with (0.0055) and the re-hone made it slightly worse. So, now its onto new pistons.

Eddie at AR found a shop to machine my ExIntake setup, so I suspect he can recommend a shop.
