Default My "budget" build

Base car is a 99 miata with 125xxx miles. Building it in order to try and outrun my cousins 468rwhp Camaro (I know the odds lol. Just for fun)
Current mods
Random parts removed. Close to 200lb or so by guess
14lb flywheel (oem shaved for $40)
Tranny and diff fluid changed
Timing bump (free, slotted oem wheel currently at 14)
Passenger side intake k&n filter (helped throttle response no torque loss noticed as of yet)

Current mod in progress
Pulled head last night and dropped it off. Getting full port polish bowl work ect. Head shave .050 ($150)
Also going to lighten the water pump pulley (s**** and giggles)
Removing random engine bay things I don't need intake braces ect
Depowering the rack and ps pump removal
Doing new crank seal, waterpump, timing belt while it's apart
Possibly do coolant reroute

Future mods will be racing beat header, msm cam, and possible square top manifold. Also debating between ms and dynotronics tune. Leaning to ms though. Small chance of future boost but more likely a 50shot of nitrous

Ideas and constructive criticism welcomed Pictures and details to come as they develop

He had me at the strip. It's just by how much. He runs a 8.3 1/8th spinning. Should get him at the local auto cross though

Anyone know if the stock ecu will handle 10.5:1 compression until I can get an ecu? Never found a thread that said so may just have to find out the hard way.
Also anyone know if there's benefits from intake porting for NA power? Only things I could find said it helped boost. Just like to get everything done while it's apart

just JBweld quarters to your pistons, it will increase compression yet keep perfect cylinder geometry.
don't bother porting the intake, just port the spark plug holes, it increases efficiency due to more thorough burn.
lastly you should port the coolant passages in the block, I hear those are major restriction points in our cars

Pics tonight hopefully. Can't upload them from my phone.
18psi you should write a book. You'd make millions on ebay. Just swap jb weld for duct tape. Jb weld is for those rich people.

Intake porting to increase power? Who told you that?

Read about it in some threads with no real answer so thought I'd ask if someone had experiance with it.

There is an actual city named Arab.

That's awesome. I guess you learn something new every day.

It used to be Arad after the guy that founded it. Some redneck misspelled it on the sign and it stuck. Just a tiny hick town near Huntsville. Got bigger when walmart showed up though! Lol

Looks like a nice car.

You need to be thinking road racing, not drag racing. You'll never be happy with a normally aspirated Miata if you're drag racing. Check out 949 racing's 95R build for putting together a nice track car on a budget. Is Tail of the Dragon in your future? Not too far from Huntsville.

10.5:1 should be fine, just run 93. You might have to put the timing back where it was originally though.

For proper intake porting you want to open it up as wide as possible, don't make it super smooth though, the rougher and more divets the better the air turbulates and mixes with the fuel once it hits the combustion chamber.

I'm sure I'll go there this summer. I've heard good things. And the car is my daily but I want it to have the spirit of a track car. The drag race is just so they'll stop talking so much trash lol. They think it's an 11 second car but they'll learn.

As to the porting have you done it and what was the results? I know the porting basics and have a background in machining. Just don't want to screw up Vic's. Or my only intake for that matter

Well after several set backs the build is finally in good shape and reliable. It is untuned but it still drives like a completely different car car and has much more power. Hope to get a time slip this Friday. Ended up with a cobalt header and Mazda speed shim under bucket lifters. Also found adjustable cam gears on eBay for $100 that do work with the cam sensor. Planing to do a DIY coolant reroute within the next week or so as well.

Yeah, so your cousins time slip indicates more in the 350whp range. How many racing stickers did he add for the extra 120hp? Ill race him!
