Default Building a 1.8

Will a 94-97 head work well (read: fit) on a Mazdaspeed 1.8 block? Edit: I've read that it will. Link for posterity: http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=246182

How much would I be gimping my setup by doing this (anything substantial? I've read ~10 hp)?

I know it's an odd question, however I recently picked up a '96 parts car for very little and want to take advantage of as much as possible.

Anyone? Is it a waste to work over a pre-'99 head?

I would just rather look for a 99, or a VVT but that would mean more $$ on management. BTW where's my block *******?
