car wont start

so today i go to start my car for the first time in a few months.

i did a new headgasket
water pump
timing belt
and a new turbo

before i started it i put fresh gas and a new battery in it

when i go to start it i hear puffs of air like something is trying to get air and cant or a pump is giving off air. the car also isnt taking gas, when i hit the petal nothing happens

hopefully my friend will chime in and give his view on what he see's

what could it be?

dustinb 10-10-2009 11:24 AM

so many possibilities.... I would start first with telling us what year of car it is, engine management, turbo setup... then I would probably take the valve cover off plus the plastic covers and make sure everything is aligned properly with the timing marks.

magnamx-5 10-10-2009 12:09 PM

you probly screwd uup the timming belt install time to review your actions and make sure everything is 100% right

curly 10-10-2009 01:42 PM

It isn't even funny how much this points to a bad timing belt job.

Savington 10-10-2009 01:44 PM

Check your timing belt.

Man, I hate having to diagnose problems based on vague, half-assed descriptions with grammar / spelling / punctuation / sentence structure that would make Mrs. Dalson, my third grade teacher, cry.

My first thought was "You got the plus wires swapped between the two coils."

But the thread, as they say, is pretty worthless without pics (from the front and from the top, with the valve cover removed and the crank at #1 TDC) and preferably also audio of the motor as you turn it over.

scottieboy5612 10-14-2009 12:05 AM

sorry about the lack of info guys i got a bit more i can get a sound clip for you tommorow

it a 91 1.6 miata 86k miles
dsm t25
megan manifold
hks wastegate
stock ecu
5psi
afm
supra green top injectors

i put in a gates racing timing belt
metal cometic head gasket

i checked my plugs and wires on my friends miata and they fired on his but wont on mine.

also i seem to be leaking compression from somewhere i cannot feel

i just checked the timing and its dead on. all exhaust and intake gaskets are tight.

also when i hit the gas pedal nothing happens but i was told this was because the car wont make compression

where should i start looking for this leak

oh yea i did just do a head gasket but it was torque down and lined up properly

No spark, ground or cas wire broke. Check and make sure your coils are grounded and plugged in. Check cas wires.

No compression. First check again and make sure the cams are in the right position. That can screw up compression and make the plugs not fire,

And when you say fire on your friends. Have you placed a spare plug in a wire, and ground it to a valve cover bolt, and have somone turn the key to see if it sarks.

If your bolts where torqued right. My bet is cam gears off timming marks.

scottieboy5612 10-14-2009 01:03 AM

yes i put my plugs ans wires on another miata and checked for spark and they did.

when you say make sure the cams are in the right position what exactly do you mean? exhaust and intake cams are on the correct side?

gonna go back and make sure the coil and cas wires are good tommorow thanks for the help

Toddcod 10-14-2009 01:05 AM

Check and see if the afm is plugged in. It has to be plugged in to get gas..
Check and make sure your ignitor is plugged in on the fire wall...Make spark
Check ground to motor.
Check ground to ecu on head.
Check red fuse under hood.
Check and see if car is out of gas! Laugh it happens.
Check cam gear marks again.

After you check to make sure you have fire with an external plug on a valve cover bolt.
If there is fire.

NEVER give a fuel injected car gas when you are starting it. A perfect car may not start.

If you have spark.....Spray some starter fluid in the intake or filterand see if it fires. If it fires don't gun it. Remember there is a turbo on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BOMB is not good. Just letting it idle is ok. but don't just fun the car on this crap long.

Remember the afm hased to be completely hooked up or the car won't run.

If no start,, Unplug ignitor... So you don't fry coil pack. Pull your plugs and try to start the car. there may still be some water in it.

This will spin and blow the remaining water out of the plug holes. After that, install plugs and hook up ignitor. Try to start again.

Problem mabe identified.

There is a dust shield behide the cam gears, it has marks on it. and there are marks on the cam gears. And a mark on the crank. You line all the marks up and then install the belt.

If the marks are not alined, no proper fire or compression.........

And to check fire on your motor you have to ground a pluge to a valve cover bolt to se it spark for your self. You can't diagnose it on a friends car.

If you didn't check for top dead center, and then aline themarks, this is the problem. It will never run to you aline the marks.
Good luck!

Im just trying to learn my way around motors thats why im coming here for help. Dont want to have to pay people to do work on my car for the rest of my life. I would rather learn when im young and continue learning than just drop my car off and leave. Sorry if im bothering you by trying to learn.

scottieboy5612 10-16-2009 12:56 PM

and toddcod the timing is perfect and the cams are lined up right

Go through the list. I posted before. Something will show up.

Miata's are notorious about the ignition switch going out as well. Everything seems right, but it won't start.

But my list will help you not spend money to eliminate it down to the problem.
Hope this helps.

magnamx-5 10-17-2009 11:32 AM

no man you just scare me thinking what you are doing to that poor miata. you have plenty of answers in this thread already just go through the list man something will turn up.

If there is fire. CHECKING FOR SPARk FROM YOUR COILS

NEVER give a fuel injected car gas when you are starting it. A perfect car may not start.

If you have spark.....Check for gas Spray some starter fluid in the intake or filterand see if it fires. If it fires don't gun it. Remember there is a turbo on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BOMB is not good. Just letting it idle is ok and will be fine. but don't just run the car on this crap long. A quick start if fine.

Remember the afm hased to be completely hooked up or the car won't get gas.

If no start,, Unplug ignitor (it just unplugs)... So you don't fry coil pack. Pull your plugs out of the car and try to start the car. there may still be some water in it. This will spin and blow the remaining water out of the plug holes.

After that, install plugs and hook up ignitor. Try to start again.

Something should show. If nothing shows.. I'd say ignition switch.

This "technique and order" saves time and lots of money.
