Cops or LS Coils? I need better spark!!
Ok, so I got water in the plug tubes after washing the engine and it took me a good 15 minutes to figure out why it was running like crap! My old NGK blue wires have had it and it's time for a spark upgrade anyway. Plus I'd like to finally get more than a pube of gap (.025) and not pop in boost. I've been looking at the COP threads and the GM LS truck coils and even a few other ideas, but I don't see an almighty Ignition coverage thread. What's new, what's been tested to work flawlesly (trick question I know)? Any multi spark options? I'm looking to stay under about $200. I know I'll get allot of crap for this, so start the beating!
96-Built, 99 head, FMII/Hydra at 15psi |
Ls beats msd. You can get ls couls from chpnswsm6 or whatever his name is. Or you can buy em new for like 30 apiece. Wires are like 130 or something depending on length. Ls2 truck coils are the current champs. You could also buy my old 01+ nb dual plug cops for cheapo. Proven good to 26psi or soemthing like that. |
Any issues with the LS truck coils ? I'm guessing they are actually from the LQ9 6.0L truck engine and not LS2. I wonder how different the plethora of other LS engine coils are such as LS1/2/6, 5.3L or 4.8L truck engines? Would they still use the miata wires?

My toyota COPs are blowing out at 23psi with .035 gap
|
23psi is quite a bit, will a .030 gap hold? I'll probably go up to @ 20psi, so that's good to know.

I'll let you know if a .030 gap holds, because that is what I just got done doing.
EDIT: You can do the COP upgrade for under a hundred bucks. I picked up the cops for $30 on ebay, connectors with pigtails for another $30 (I think, may have been less), capacitors on ebay were cheap, I bought a spare ignitor to do the conversion for $20, then wire and a strip of aluminum to hold it down. If the .030 gap doesn't work, then I will probably look into the truck coils. |
I haven't seen a set of cops for $30 yet. I may end up going straight to the truck coils myself.
|
I jumped on a set of the LS2 truck coils. I'll be buying the plug wires soon, so if anyone wants to pitch in, I'll split them with you. Found the magnecores for $80 at Alamoautosports.

So far .030 is bueno
|
How do you wire these up?
|
just do the cops, they are more than enough at your power level.

Any good links to "understanding COPS and wiring them up"? It's a car part that makes no sense to me, basically magical spark mershines.

I run stock coils in the winter cause my toyota COPs don't like my low battery voltage in the winter...or dont' like being cold in general, not sure. But the car backfires bad, like spin the engine the wrong way against the starter bad. But in the summer it's all good.
I only did COPs cause Lazzer gave them to be dirt cheap with wires. Otherwise this low boost street guy would run his oem coils all the time. |

If not you may experience sadness. |
What all is involved wiht the LS2 coils and wires? If I can't get the COPs working I'm going to explore alternatives such as this before I jump on the FM LS3 bandwagon.

4 wires
hot power ground signal signal ground bus the hots together bus the power grounds together bus the signal grounds together run each signal wire to your ems |
Sequential sounds easy enough, however do I need custom plug wires?
