Crank-Angle sensor question

I've got an 01 block in my 97 body. Im wondering if the CAS sensor off the 01 will work with the 97 harness. The plugs are the same, but the two sensors look different.

Anyone know if it'll work for sure?

y8s 05-20-2010 03:16 PM

Doesn't the 97 use the sensor mounted to the back of one of the cams? And it's like a 6 pin connector? The 01 cam sensor is like two pins.

y8s 05-20-2010 03:18 PM

oh
wait
CAS = cam angle sensor usually
CKP = crank sensor

I was confused.

is this with the 97 ecu?

flier129 05-20-2010 03:30 PM

yes, stock 97 ecu :(

The crank sensor in the '96-'97 cars is a bare VR sensor (no electronics) which has a balanced, shielded output, where Y/B and Y/W are the differential signal pair, and B/LG goes to the shield, and eventually to ground.

On the '99 and later cars, the crank sensor has a hall-style (open-collector) output, where W/R is +12, V/W is the output, and B/L is GND.

You absolutely cannot use the crank sensor from an '01 engine with a '97 ECU, however you could plug it into the '97s wiring harness if you have an aftermarket ECU, and have made the appropriate provisions in the wiring at that end.

Well damn.

How can I get a crank-angle signal from the 01 block then?

My MS didn't need the CKS as you told me once upon a time Joe. Surely getting my MS up and running isnt the only solution.... is it?

I guess a $400 MS is cheaper than getting another car to drive haha.

For a stock '97 ECU? Transplant the timing wheel and sensor from the '97 engine onto the '01 motor. (Yes, the wheel has a different pattern.)

Or you could just say Frak it and live with the CEL.

The problem is the mounting point for the CKS is different on the 01 block vs the 97 block :(

Also, I thought the ECU needed a correct crank-angle signal to know when to spark?

My problem is Im not getting any spark, I've replaced the plugs and coilpack. Haven't tried new wires yet though. Im thinking maybe theres a short in my wiring harness after the 30 volts ran thru my system.

The 97 only uses the crank wheel sensor for misfire detection. All the ignition timing stuff comes from the CAS driven off the back of the exhaust cam.

Are you sure? I thought they were the same.

AFAIK the 97 ECU uses CKP for misfire detection, not for normal operation.

Well then theres something wrong with my CAS, furk!

Which component usually goes out with a CAS, the plug, the actual sensor??

mikeflys1 05-20-2010 05:34 PM

Does the 01 engine actually still have the slots in the back of the cam to drive it? :giggle:

flier129 05-20-2010 05:40 PM

Im using a 99 head witha 97 CAS

flier129 05-24-2010 05:28 PM

Can anyone confirm that the crank-angle sensor is for mis-fire detection only.

JasonC SBB 05-24-2010 10:29 PM

If it's got 2 signals coming out of the CAS, (4 wires total), then it is most likely correct.

Yes. All NB engines except for the Euro-spec 1.6 have the slot on the back of the exhaust cam for the CAS.

I am 97.4% certain that this is the case. The addition of the crank sensor corresponded temporally with the removal of the IGf signal, which was the misfire-detection mechanism on the pre-OBDII engines.

Hath thou access to an OBD-II scanner?

Running the scanner tomorrow, Ill post back up with the codes it shows.

What should I be looking for?
