Crank Problem?

Ok...I have the pulley wobble problem off the crank on my 1993 1.6. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to deal with it properly & I've had to press the Miata into daily driver service because my truck is broken down. Now I have a rotating clunk sound that comes from the bottom of the engine when the car is in neutral & the clutch is out...doesn't sound as bad with the clutch in. Does sound like crap but different when driving the car. I'm guessing I FUBARED the crank & now I have to pull the engine and go through it or get another engine. Sound about right? Would love to hear I'm wrong because I'll be down to commuting on the motorcycle & it'll take me forever to fix the darn thing. Truck will be first.

yea I am pretty sure its fubar. there is plenty of info on this. I would look up "miata loctite crank fix" for info on your particular problem and how you could have fixed it. or maybe its not too far yet.

fastnfurious7 10-12-2011 11:39 AM

Yeah...I'm pretty sure it's beyond the locktite fix because my idiot ass drove it without fixing it for too long. However, I'm getting some info on another site that I can still WELD the pulley to the crank & set for TDC & it will turn true & quit making the noise. I know I'm an idiot...but why does the noise go away with the clutch in? Isn't the pulley still rotating the crank? Shows you how little I know about all of this stuff.

I thought this was going to be another drug abuse counseling thread.

Be careful when welding the pulley to the crank. It may take the temper out of the metal or mess up the elastomer in the damper. I would use some industrial adhesive or something first. Or JB weld, lol. Timing belt and seal changes will suck if you don't use something removable.

fastnfurious7 10-12-2011 01:34 PM

I hear you, sixshooter...it would be a fix to simply have something to drive until I could afford a motor or to rebuild this one I suppose. Too many projects...too little time & money...too few vehicles that aren't broken. I will DEFINITELY up the boost...lol...no. See crank walk...that's funny too.

Don't give up until you get into it. The pulley bolt does loosen once it starts wobbling. It doesn't necessarily mean your crank is broken. Doing the locktite fix doesn't take any longer than doing a timing belt. Look to Rosenthal (Finish Line) for parts.

Each of your sentences could be a fortune cookie fortune.

What are my lucky numbers?

fastnfurious7 10-13-2011 01:21 PM

Will I get the miata home without it falling apart? All answers point to yes... I was given a pass at work to limp the sucker home & grab the motorcycle so I wouldn't have to drive the miata to Atlanta for my shift today (always work back to back 24 hour shifts). So, in the morning when I finally get home I will have a go @ taking the pulley apart & hopefully posting some decent pics.

fastnfurious7 10-19-2011 05:09 PM

I'll post up some pics tomorrow because I left my phone @ work day before yesterday when I did all the work & it's the only camara I have. So, I took everything apart & it appears that one of the PO's of the car (I would assume this was done after a timing belt change) installed the woodruff key for the crank gear upside down so the bevel wasn't against the crank it was against the gear. It wasn't able to seat all the way in & was crushed by the crank gear...I can move the crushed woodruff key 1 to 2 mm in the crank gear's keyway. I FUBARED the crank gear to get it off because it didn't want to come off & had to be heated with a torch so I have to get one of those &, of course, the crank seal that is leaking badly. Good news is that the keyway on the crank appears to have survived. I'll get the pics up & hopefully I will have purchased all the necessary parts to put this thing back together.

hornetball 10-19-2011 06:23 PM

Wow. This is an easy one. The keyway in my crank nose was pretty worn when I opened mine.

I bought my parts from Rosenthal (Finish Line). They have everything you need decently priced. They also have a smoking combo deal on a TB + WP (that includes all seals and pulleys). You might want to do that since you are this far in.

Well, in this case, the fortune cookie post brought luck!! OP has an easy fix on his hands.

sixshooter 10-20-2011 02:54 PM

The op dodged a bullet. It sounds like he ought to be the one playing the lottery.

+1 on Rosenthal
