Crankshaft bearing

Hey guys, just wanted to get some advice from some of you guys. I’m picking up a VVT motor tomorrow afternoon that had a spun rod bearing. I was under the impression that the damage caused to the crankshaft bearing from the spun rod bearing could be shaved/polished down and would be no issue. I shot the idea over to the best BP tuner I’ve heard about in my area and he said I might need a new crank but he can’t quite tell from this pic. I won’t have any more pics until tomorrow when I grab the motor. Either way I’m gonna pick this motor up and if I have to I’ll throw a new crank in there, but wanted to get some other opinions on this

taking pictures wont tell you anything, take it to a machine shop.

Agreed. Your guy is correct in that it's impossible to differentiate between the following three states based on even the highest-quality photographs:

.
● That's totally fine.
● It'll need to be turned down, and an oversize bearing installed.
● That crankshaft is trash.
.

Like, imagine the sort of time and effort that Braineack invests into taking the best possible images of his cats. If that same 35mm camera with expensive lens was pointed at that engine, the answer would be the same. Even if we could read the license plate number off of the reflection.

Whereabouts in SW FL? Charlotte county is my old stomping ground.

Thanks for the responses guys, definitely appreciate it. I’m going to pick the motor up today so I’ll bring it on down to a shop sometime next week and have them check out the damage.

Im in Lee County (Cape Coral/Fort Myers) born and raised here. Charlotte County is right next door.

I spun a rod bearing last summer. When I stripped it down and took it to a high quality engine machine shop, they were clear.
It could be salvaged by turning it down, and then checking to see if it was cracked, but they would never be able to say if it was also heat damaged.
They said throw it away and get another.

It looked a bit worse than your picture.
You are going to have to trust your machinist.

So YOU'RE the one! God damn, I thought I'd be haunted by that forever.

I remember seeing your parents walking through the Shell Factory many years ago (back when it was also an amusement park, with rides and bumper boats), and thinking to myself "That couple looks like the sort of people who are going to give birth to a son who will one day find himself in the unfortunate position of dealing with a galled crankshaft."

It was a weirdly specific vibe, and I kinda shook it off at the time. But I've never been able to completely escape it. Like, not knowing if I'd hallucinated it, or if it was a genuine act of prescience.

The machinist primarily specializes in BP motors from what I’ve seen and has made some of the sickest BP builds I’ve seen. He also tuned my budget turbo build a few years back at 225whp on a 1.6 on EVO ECU. I trust him pretty good.

I laughed pretty hard at this lol. The first few sentences started off pretty legit.
