Cylinder coating
 

I been going thru threads all day an I haven't scene anything posted I am rebuild a1.8 1996 1.8 and I was about to hone and cross hatch the cylinders and a friend told me not to because the cylinders might be coated with I can't remember what he said the coating was but its to harden the cylinder and if I hone it I have to get it recoated does anyone no if this is true I have heard of aluminum blocks being coated but not cast iron so now I am lost I been lookin on the internet can't find any info does anyone no if the 1996 1.8 cylinders are coated and if so if I hone them does it have to be recoated?

Aluminum cylinder bores on certain cars like the Porsche 928 had a special coating and were therefore unable to be bored. Our agrarian cast iron blocks are not a special issue that requires special treatment. Technology from the 1930s will be just fine for them.

Nikasil is probably what your friend is thinking of. It is used on aluminum blocks on various engines. 2-stroke motorcycle for instance. Not on iron blocks.

Any time you think there might be something fancy about these motors, just ignore that thought. These are basic unremarkable not-awesome motors in every possible way you can think of. It doesn't get any more basic bitch PSL flaccid hog than this.
