Danger to the manifold! An intake manifold shootout?

OK so with my recent kerfluffle about intake manifold benefits, I would like to propose the following!

Intake Manifold Shootout!

I'll pay for the dyno time to test out several 1.8 manifolds, back to back, on the same day.

Potential Challenges:
  1. This could possibly be troublesome since coldside IC piping may need to be done as well but I may be able to figure out some sort of multi-coupler rapidly-reconfigurable setup.
  2. I only have the stocker and a gutted one right now. I will need to gather up a few loaner parts for this shootout.
  3. We would have to do a little fuel retuning between intakes since the airflow (hopefully) characteristics will be different and we will want the AFRs to match up.
  4. We might need to mess with the throttle cable and may have different throttle bodies depending on the intakes.

Benefits:

We'll have empirical results!

Method:

I can use my car, or we can use any turboed car. I say 1.8 because that's what I have. We could do the same for a 1.6 as well too though. I think higher boost would improve the measurement resolution as benefits/drawbacks would be more pronounced.

And, if anyone else is interested in doing this, I would be glad to ship my gutted mani to you and contribute $ to the dyno time for the shootout.

Anyone interested?

Saint_foo has a '97 cast BEGi IM he is about to remove, which you could use for this test. It's going to come out before the end of Aug.

I'm down with buying / swapping an intake if someone has one for sale that'll fit my 99.

I decided to dyno my stock 99 manifold vs gotpsi's manifold. Sooo yea. But that won't be until this fall.

No user by gotpsi name?

Gotpsi? is the screename. Gotpsi? intake manifold build :https://www.miataturbo.net/showthrea...ntake+manifold

Please post the result when you get it done. I would love to find out how much gain from Gotpsi? intake manifold.

maybe someone can find one of them fancy mazdaspeed IRTB manifolds with the plenum

I know Ive seen it on here as well as some other places, but I sure as hell cant find it.
I know the setup was discontinued by mazdaspeed

edit:
I still cant find it, wtf

Found a catalog picture... still looking for a picture of it on a BP.
You'd probably have an easier time finding a radiator for a 77' VW Beetle then one of these IMs.

Good ups for the willingness to pony up $1500+ for dyno and tuner rental to do this shootout for us all. Let us know what the results are.

I have a dyno hookup.. As for the tuning, wouldn't it mostly be a matter of just scaling and then a little smoothing?

Who's doing that "scaling and smoothing"?

I could have sworn that someone on here had one

...and you guys probably think I'm a pretty useless and non-contributing member

Sure why not. I suppose it will loosen up your tuning hand?

Der_Idiot 07-30-2010 07:02 PM

Watching this thread like a hawk, those manifolds by Gotpsi? are nice. If there's numbers to back them then so much the better.

As for TB, I'm wondering if I should stick with the stock or go with a bigger one? I am just hoping those who do these tests be consistent with the TB selection too :)

Aricjm15 07-30-2010 07:15 PM

I can say I dyno'd 220 hp on my setup last year with the stock intake manifold. I will definitely get some dyno time in with the Gotpsi? manifold, but it will probably not be relevant due to the built motor and all the other little crap that I have fixed during the build.
