Do I want a 2560?
Or am I going to get bored with it? Currently have a 2554 at 12.5 psi on my built 1.6. Tune is decent but I haven't been to a dyno yet. I turned it up to 12.5 psi a few weeks ago and it felt awesome but now Im bored again. Am I going to be happy with a 2560 at 15 psi? What kind of power could I expect? FYI I love the insta spool of the 2554 and have read that the 2560 is maybe slighty slower.
Supporting equipment includes: MS Rx7 550's 29x9x3 IC Begi cast mani Begi 2.5 to 2.75 dp 3" mandrel bend exhaust I do plan on getting one of those new Begi IM's if they proove worthwhile. What say you? __________________ Best Car Insurance | Auto Protection Today | FREE Trade-In Quote |
I run a GT3271 and I wouldn't go smaller now. I get full boost (11 PSI) around 4K from a second gear pull, 3500 full boost from a 3rd gear pull, 3200 full boost 4th gear pull.
LAG IS SO OVERRATED!!! It's seriously not that bad. Say I'm going down the road and you roll up beside me at 30mph. We both take off from second gear. Time zero. Identical cars, identical boost. T=1 second you'll be in full boost and pull me by one car length while mine's spooling. T=1.5 I'm in full boost now. T=2 I'm already beside you and pulling. T=3 seconds your behind me. T=5 seconds your 5 cars behind me. T=10 your 15 cars behind me. It might be more fun for that 1 second, but I can assure you it's worth the wait with a bigger turbo. Don't "worry" about spool too much. Everyone on this site is obsessed with it like a IRRRRTB fanboi with his asshole-ripping throttle response. Get over it. You got a built motor, put that shit to use! |
I hear ya Pat. Damn I wish there were more turbo people around here so I could feel different turbo's. I really don't know what anything but mine feels like.

Put yours in second gear and make a boosted pull to 60. That's slower than my 3rd gear to 80. Put yours in 3rd gear and pull to 80. That's my 5th gear to 130. etc. All boost is awesome. I choose my size turbo because I wanted more than 230whp (2554 maxed out) or 280whp (upper limits of 2560). I wanted 300whp with head room for more when I build a motor. I'm around 270whp now at 11 PSI. It's nice. I ran 15 PSI for a day and that shit was NUTS! I so gotta build me a motor and put this thing to 350whp. This turbo is efficient to 400whp easy.

Your a bad influence on me lol.

Think of all the shit you're spent time and money on for your car to put HP to the ground. Why choose a turbo that can't put all that time and money to use?
I'll say this. You will NOT regret putting a big turbo on your car. It's so nice to have power at higher RPMs where your small turbo is choking. If you put a GT3271 on yours, it would be like the difference from going N/A to GT2554 all over again. You'd wonder how you drove all those miles without it. |
It depends on what you use your car for. Pat's turbo would piss me off to no end, because I would quickly get frustrated with the lag.

If you're racing and always above 4500, it spools as fast as you can hit the pedal. For auto-x it would probably suck, but for any track I think it would be ok.
|
Phil,
My 2560 is always at 10-11 psi anytime I put my foot into the throttle, partial or full, in any gear 2 thru 6. 1st gear happens too fast for me to look at the boost gauge. :) This is with my 95k mile 1.8, stock cat/midpipe, and 2.5" exhaust. |
I guess the question you have to ask yourself is, how often are you going to find yourself boosting for 5 to 10 seconds?
I don't track or drag my car yet. It's strictly a daily commuter car and weekend drop top canyon carver. If I'm boosting for more than 5 seconds in L.A. traffic, I'm looking to make the headline news as another idiot causing a 10 car pile up on the I-5, or plowing through a group of pedestrians crossing the street. |

I kinda wanna downgrade to a 2871 with the anti-surge comp housing.

That's just the thing - with a huge turbo you end up caught between gears a lot. There are some corners where I don't want to be shifting down into 2nd or 3rd because as soon as I roll on the power I'll be into the rev limiter. It would be even worse with a big turbo. I want a turbo on track that is on full chat at 3000 or 3500rpm, because when I want to hold a gear through a quick bend and not be struggling to come down an off-camber hill AND find 4th gear.

I would imagine the shorter, more twisty the track, the worse? But if it's a DD and highway runner big turbo's are sweet.

you want a 1.8L
|
That's the thing, I do DD this car but I also want to do some open track, Im not into drag racing and I take my car the the Dragon every year.

Get a turbo like what hustler is running. Bigger than a 2560 and smaller than mine. You don't really need one like mine unless you're shooting for 400whp. What's your power goal?
|
Does the fact that he's got a 1.6 vs a 1.8 factor in at all?
I'd imagine it wouldn't be a huge thing, but seeing as most info is coming from 1.8 guys thought I'd throw it out there... PS--Phil, tho my car wasn't sorted out, we did do a couple small runs a while back remember. I'd say spool difference was prob a lil less than 500rpm, tho again I dont know if the .2 in displacement skews the lag factor, or how much by. FWIW at that time we had nearly identical setups (exhaust, IC, maps, etc...) |

That's my plan at least. One day I'll grow up and decide if it's going to be the 99 or the 01 head... |
