DW200 issues

Recently there has been a lot of discussion in here for DW200 pump failures.

I think my DW200 is wearing out in about a year. Purchased from TSE in March 2018 so should not be a knock-off. I am not loosing fuel up top, but it is taking longer and longer to give me a Pre-Start prime.

What's the consensus on these failures? Is that a common thing? I already have a (slightly used) DW200 that came with my KW Rotrex kit than I planned on installing (since the OEM one has 120k miles now) but I am now having second thoughts.

Data points from other DW200 users will be appreciated!

I've had no issues, over a year. If you got it with the kit, what's the harm in using it?

ysleem 05-18-2019 08:46 AM

I haven't had issues. I might have a DW300 though not sure.

I ran out of fuel due to original OEM pump getting weak (1999). Replaced it with a DW100 from Amazon in March 2017. In March 2018, I ran out of fuel in same area, so I replaced the DW100 with a DW200 from Trackspeed. Now I am having to run it for 2 seconds, then repeat key cycle, in order to get a proper Priming Pulse. Still plenty of fuel up top, even though I am running more boost this year, but a larger flow pump.

Running stock wiring and relay.

IIRC Andy replaced filter and pump at the same time without thoroughly troubleshooting. Could have simply been a filter blockage.

I'm just under a year and about 7k miles on my dw200 with no issues.

I pulled the fuel filter first when I did my pump install and it was definitely not blocked. You could still blow through it just fine. Granted I didn't cut it in half, or just do the filter and take a drive afterwards to see if things changed. But the likliehood of the filter bring the issue is very low.

I've just installed a fuel pressure gauge and will have some logs to show soon.

Check your filter sock. Mine had collapsed on the end of my DW300.

So, with the 1 yr old DW200, I had to go through a full 2 second prime cycle, and there was a sound at the tank like air bubbles. Then I could go back to OFF, and then to start for a good start cycle.

This is a video after I put in the Walbro 190 HP. This is with 0.300 prime delay (like I used to do) and the key goes directly from OFF to START:

I am also a little rich up top with the 190 HP, but mostly my issue was with spin-up, and it has been solved with the new pump.

Wait you can just go from off to start?? I always feel like I wait to hear the pump shut off with the DW200 before cranking. Should I not do that or not have to? I don't think I've ever just turned on the car before the pump shut off just to try. I don't have the air bubble sound as you describe, i'll listen tomorrow.

Very impressive start by the way!

DNMakinson 05-28-2019 08:06 PM

Yes, it is possible.

I know it is common to wait, but if the goal is "just like OEM" then OFF to START is the goal.

I use a fairly heavy Priming Pulse. That is what allows the car to start quickly. I don't wait for the Starting Pulse to wet the intake walls.

Regarding not waiting for the prime to end: During the crank, there is enough time for a 0.3 second delay and then the Priming Pulse to occur by the time everything syncs and the normal fuel and spark begin (that takes half to 1 second, IIRC).

This is pump gas. I am not sure one can get as quick a start with E85.

I admit that I have probably spent way too much time on starting.

I spent a lot of time as well getting my cranking pulse and start up right on the car. Works well now.

Can we all start to agree that the dw200 = garbage?

:crx: this sucks, I just finished putting one into my car and had to remove the roll bar to get access. In for more success stories??

~10 months 8k miles on my dw200 no issues. Almost exclusively e85.

Ted75zcar 05-29-2019 08:52 PM

5ish years on DW200, no issues. Gasoline followed by e85.

Midtenn 05-30-2019 09:45 AM

Been running a DW200 for 5+ years and have not issues. Had a Walbro fail on me in less than a year. Things happen. A few failures does not a trend make.

Indeed. Go to various forums, Honda, Subie, etc, and some love Walbro, some love Deatschwerks. Not much info on AEM.

I suppose the ideal would be a Mazda (or other OEM) drop-in replacement with more flow. But then, we would be spending $350 instead of $100; which means most of us would not buy it anyway.

I have a DW200 but it's only a few months old so can't speak on longevity. It has a 3 year warranty and it was a super easy install, so I'm not too stressed.

RunninOnEmpty 01-01-2023 12:57 AM

Dredging this one up, so it doesn’t become a Supertech Valvestem seal caper, where everyone thinks it’s just them.

NB1, Returnless. DW200 died this week. 18 months, just under 5000 miles. Was installed June ‘21, same time as a Trackspeed dedicated FP wire/relay kit. I wrapped it in the same foam noise isolator my original Walbro 255 came with. No continuity across the terminals. Going back to Walbro. I forgot how loud it was!
