Dyno tuning, how much time is needed?
Going to the dyno soon to get the car tuned. It's running pretty good on a more or less rough street tune (mostly through MLV) and pulls strong to redline (7500rpm). I figured about two hours for the fuel and spark tables and another hour to play around with cam timing. Got new adjustable cam gears, this paired with the exhintake swap should be worth a couple of extra hp.
Would 3 hours (roughly) total be enough for fuel, spark and some fiddling with cams be enough to get a pretty good tune? (tuner knows MS so that's no problem btw) |
good tuner needs about 2 hours on average
|
30 minutes for fuel
2:30 for spark |
also depends on if the tuner knows your EMS well or not.
I would say at least 3 hours, easy. |
Depending on the tuner, 2-3 hours is probably going to be required for maximizing fuel and ignition. Fooling around with the cam timing (which in itself is going to require tweaking of the fuel and ignition maps) is going to require quite a bit more time, if not a whole dyno session of its own.

We do a ton of tuning at the shop I work at, and most cars can be fully tuned in 2-3 hours. Fiddling with adjustable cam gears is pretty easy if you've cut the front of the valve cover off (or have one you can swap on). If the valve cover has to be removed every time to change your settings, you'll be there a long long time.
|
I cut the valvecover so the camgears are exposed. I still need to put the new gears on so I'm not even sure that they're done in time. I'll see how far 3 hours on the dyno will get me powerwise. Camgears can wait tho, need to index them correctly since I did the exhintake swap. Exhaust cam is pretty straightforward, intake will take some time I guess...

Tomorrow's the big day. Will report back with dyno plots and results. Pretty stoked already :giggle:

It took Jerry at DIYAutoTune about 3 hours to tune my car. He said it was a good bit less time then normal because I had a good cooling setup. The problem comes with holding your car at a steady rpm and moving across cells. This heats thigns up pretty quickly.

Car is now dyno-tuned :) Spent a little over 2 hours on the dyno. Fuel was dialed in pretty good, so most time was used on getting spark right. Final result: 138.2 rwhp and 159.8 rwtq. This was with some ignition advance removed again to keep knock under control. Quite happy :) Did not even bother with cam timing today, will save that for a later dyno session. Hoping to break 145 rwhp then, should be possible.
KnocksenseMS is set up properly now too. Kept adding timing until it knocked, then adjusted the KSMS so the LED would go on. Then removed some timing (2-3 degrees I think) to keep it safe. Dyno plot should be up soon. |
damn, good numbers for NA....actually, awesome.
|
I'm pretty excited too. All in all, n/a mods do seem to help a little. Short intake (silicone elbow, pipe and cone filter), exhintake swap (little off timing probably tho) and a decent exhaust go a long way. The drivability and usable power on the road are plain awesome. I can only imagine how a properly tuned turbo setup on my car would feel like.
We did lower the rev limit a bit. Power was dropping off significantly after 6.5k rpm and playing with ignition timing didn't seem to help much around 7k. Maybe headwork and putting on the adjustable camgears will help the engine breathe easier at rpms near redline. |
Where did you have it tuned? At Zomer?
|
yeah, went there this morning. They mentioned your car too btw :)
|
Did you look at the output of the before run, cuz around 110WHP should've been your baseline I suppose? Curious as to what my car puts our now.. :)
|
we did one baseline pull, came out around 112 rwhp. Picked up almost 30 whp and a good amount of torque all along the rev range.
accel enrichments are pretty good now, only thing left is to fix the idle and some funky starting/dieying issue... |
What kind of dyno was this on?
great numbers na. WOW!! |

Wait, you hit that much with just cams and breathing mods? Damn.
|
That's a very generous dyno.
