Engine being pulled - any preventative maint while it's out?
What's up peeps!
Summer's right around the corner and I figured I'd finally get off my ass and prep my 95 Miadur for the turbo treatment she so deserves. I finally pieced most of my turbo kit together and decided to tap the oil pan the right way by pulling the engine and dropping the oil pan. While I'm in there I wanted to replace the transmission (synchro grinds), so pretty much the entire drivetrain is going to be extracted. My question is this: while the engine/tranny is out, are there any parts the veterans can recommend that I replace for preventative maintenance purposes? Any common trouble areas that the 1.8's experience that are a bitch to work on while inside the engine bay? Maybe there are some inherit weaknesses that aftermarket items can fix? I plan on replacing the throwout bearing, clutch, resurfacing flywheel, oil pan gasket, all fluids, and I'll keep an eye out for any other leaky gaskets (rear main?). The engine has 66k on it, and the replacement transmission has between 40-50k or so. Thanks in advance to whomever can lend their :2cents:. |
Here's my thread on the subject with some suggestions...
Basically, what you're doing, but go ahead and get new cam and crank seals from rock auto and do a timing belt and water pump. https://www.miataturbo.net/general-miata-chat-9/while-ive-got-motor-out-am-i-missing-anything-54599/ |

On timing and water pump, Rosenthal Mazda has a kit with everything you need for ~$189. Good way to go.

Rock auto is quite a bit cheaper if you piece it together yourself though... TB kit is ~$40, water pump for about the same, seals are 4-$8/each.
