Ah ok... hard to tell from stock photo.
My mistake. |
I don't see the appeal. My trackspeed COP kit bolts the coil down to the head, these do not.
|
I'm guessing its mainly cost. And not having to worry about dwell. Having an ecu is a big decision for most people. And 300 bucks is nothing to someone that owns a 10K dollar race car, but to the backyard mechanic/average enthusiast its almost as much as new tires/ timing belt/maintenance parts. SO its a tough one because 300 is okay for most, its just the ecu/tuning that brings the costs up to 1K. (all new components, I'm sure you can find everything cheaply for that 90 model you may have, but I have a 2000 parts are just a little harder to find)
SO in the end 250 vs 1000. That it. |

All I mean is if you had a version with some tie-down brackets for a VVT head that I did not know about. I don't consider free-floating coils as acceptable either.

So more like 2019?
:giggle: I keed I keed |
well it seems that FAB9 has uploaded the connector us 99-00 need. Amazing how this guy works.
Linky Still wondering what kinda components are offered...Using the AEM brand controller only leaves 79 bucks to buy one coil, so I feel that there might be use of inferior components. Hm..... Then there's the fact that it doesnt have the aem pt number or writing on the front of the controller. I really want to spend my money, but its sketchy. |
Probably because its not an AEM. It looks like one but according to the thread on Mazda-speed and m.net, its a Bosch part.
Fab9 Coil-on Plug - MX-5 Miata Forum Fab9 Coil On Plug Conversion Kits - Now Shipping Kit includes: • DENSO Iridium IK24 spark plugs (compatible with pencil coils) Kit is designed to support up to a system running 24lbs of boost pressure • 4 DENSO CDI Compatible Pencil Coils • 1 Bosch CD Ignition Module • Complete wire harness • Wire pin-out reference guide |
got an email from fab9, says he gots insider pricing.
Meanwhile I'm gonna look for cheaper sparkplugs. |
Ok so i just read through this thread and im still stuck. With money not an option, im looking for quality and performance. Should i buy the trackspeed COP kit or the Fab9Tuning COP kit??
|
Both will tell you theirs is better.
No one here (that we know of) has tried both. So why don't you be the guinea pig |
I won't comment on comparing the kits because I've never used the Toyota Coils but I can tell you what I offer.
I should mention: - We're overwhelmed with orders so you can expect a 2-3 week turn around time. - Some DIY Megasquirt ECU's have required modification to drive our ignition module properly (you must use 4 ignition outputs because of the weaker output signal). |

When are tax sale orders shipping? I ordered my COP on April 3rd... still waiting.
Keith I don't show any orders still pending from the third. There is a chance it's already shipped. Send me your order details? Some kits have been delayed due to the connector inventory in the US but I don't show any that old. Cheers. |

DIY NB2 Coil On Plug Option - 1997 Mazda MX-5 Miata Long-Term Road Test
Coils: '08-'09 Honda CBR1000RR; Denso p/n 129700-5150 Igniter: '97-'01 Audi A4 1.8 Turbo 8D0905351 All told, DIY'ing this is only slightly cheaper than buying Fab9's kit, after the parts, connectors, wiring, etc. I'll be sitting right around $200 if you include the new terminal die for my ratchet crimper (which will get much more use than just this project). I could have saved by waiting for a better deal on used coils (~$20) and by getting a new Chinese igniter instead of a used Bosch (~$15). I am saving because I'm pretty sure the Iridium plugs I have use the screw on terminal adapter, and I already have expandable braided sleeving, heat shrink, a soldering iron, silver solder, etc. I am not saving because I will need a tach adapter of some sort. I am going to try the TachAdapter from AutoSport Labs and wrap it into the first part of the harness. My plot here is to delete the OEM coil pack so I can do a spacerless reroute with the 1.8 water neck after tapping the boss on the passenger side for a heater core fitting and using the plugged passage for the temp sensor. Then I will swap my 99 engine/subframe into my car. Mod after that will be MS3, and either sell this setup and move to LS2 coils, or run it till it fails. Edit: Manufacturer is TE Connectivity. 828904-1 JPT Contact Wire Seal 1.2-2.1mm Insulation 828905-1 JPT Contact Wire Seal 2.2-3.0mm Insulation 282192-1 4-Pos JPT Connector Spring Lock 282193-1 5-Pos JPT Connector Spring Lock 2-964286-1 JPT Receptacle Contacts, Gold Plated :burncash: 17-20AWG I also found this in the catalog, it comes in a 4-pos and I don't know if it's needed but it's cheap and I'm getting one anyway. 963208-1 4-Pos Terminal Seal |

This being said it really boils down to your situation. Even for the guys running a custom management system, our "Hard-wire" kit is only $259.00 and is ready for full-sequential and 4 channel wasted spark setups. A couple of things to consider is the build quality. We assemble on average 4 kits a day at this point so we've become very efficient. All measurements are precise and we use high quality materials - nylon flexible sheathing, adhesive shrink tubing... https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1399132139 All joints are soldered and properly sealed with marine quality adhesive shrink tubing. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1399132139 And as a bonus we will sell you an intercooler and it and still only pay our $9 flat rate shipping. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1399132139 |
^dis guy... dis guy iz gud. srsly.
|
Looks very high quality. Almost like something I'd do. ;) After figuring out the costs, I decided to do it anyway because I like building things.

No one here (that we know of) has tried both. So why don't you be the guinea pig I've got a used TSE bracket and I happen to be using the same coil PN TSE ships with their kit, but I picked them up used before TSE even had their kit on the market. I've got 6-7 coils and at least 2 of them have "issues" after abusing them with my stock ECU but I've been too lazy to sort them out and re-install the TSE style kit. I'm one of those guys who opted to pick up the Fab9 kit "sans assembly" so I could do my own harness and wire routing. I still have not figured out where to mount the module and until I do that, I won't have the harness done and I won't be able to test it. I also have LS2 truck coils somewhere :hahano: The goal is to eventually build legit PNP harnesses for ALLTHECOILS but I'm nowhere near that yet. Ignition options: I haz them. I swear I'm going to have the most over built car on the planet. |
