Fan Fans and more cooling fans.

I'm at point I need to make some decisions on fans for the MSM build. Its a STREET car and will prob never see a tack and it will retain AC Has a Trackspeed kit with EFR6758.. That said I have bought a SuperMiata Cross flow Radiator but up in air on the fans.

1)Keep MSM fans.

2)Buy Flyn Miata fan kit. Don't know how it fits SuperMiata Rad. https://www.flyinmiata.com/nb-stage-...rflow-kit.html

3) Buy Mishimoto fans and shroud and If I do keep the fans or just use shroud and get some Spal stuff.
4)How about Ford Contour fan, flow great (3500CFM) and shroud is really close 24"x14" My son has them cooling a LS Turbo swapped Foxbody with no issues. https://www.1aauto.com/radiator-dual...QaAhyvEALw_wcB

5) What other options am I missing.

I do not have AC, but was running a single oem driver side fan with no shroud and it worked great on the street. Never had a single issue even in the hot Texas summers. Car had a 1.8 with the FMII turbo kit and Qmax reroute.

Making $300+ hp?

255whp and the Supermiata radiator. That radiator is so good I'm keeping it for my LFX swap and just switched to a more powerful single spal fan.

This spal fits perfectly on the Supermiata radiator (Spal 30100467 12" Curved Blade Puller Fan). And if you get the feet, flip them upside down and the fan sits flush against radiator with some diy aluminum brackets.

Im running a volvo 850 fan on a custom sealed shroud and pwm fan controler. In my opinion the FM fan is overkill. Anything over maybe 20mph and your fan isnt doing anything because of airflow and stuff i dont feel like explaining. So all you really need to do is have enough airflow to keep the system cool in low speed situations like traffic.

I have a monster fan and will probably sell it for a spal fan in similar cfm to have a thinner profile.

Never ever ever ever use Mishimoto fans.

Also: Turbo street cars with AC absolutely do use cooling fans while in motion. Entire engine bay is a high pressure area and the front of a Miata isn't really great for forcing air past that, let alone through 3 heat exchangers. (Note: I'm ASSuming we aren't talking about a car with a ton of ducting and hood vents)

matrussell122 04-08-2019 12:08 PM

I was meaning a car with proper ducting and venting. That should be standard operating procedure for anyone on here that has a turbo or at least proper ducting at a minimum

Hood vents on order. Still concerned about where the rain is going to end up. Street car, will never be in a garage. Going to live a rough life outdoors.

The reality is that street cars don't need that. Keep as much oem stuff as you can, slam some strong fans and a good radiator in there, drive. "Requiring" street cars to have race car levels of ducting is how we get stupid unenjoyable million dollar street car builds.

OP, i'd leave the stock fans if you can fit them. Then just... make sure you run an undertray and have gaps in front of rad sealed up. Send.

matrussell122 04-08-2019 12:31 PM

But proper ducting isnt something complicated. You could have decent ducting in an afternoon with some cardboard templates and maybe $50 worth of materials. It wouldn't be race car level but certainly better than OEM.
For example decent ducting with non molested hood and oem fans should be more than adequate for just the street. Would you agree? Also a reroute is a huge plus to the whole cooling system.

When i installed my hood vents though i did drop a good 10-15° which was nice.

Dont want it to sound like i am arguing either. Just a friendly discussion. ;)

Oem ducting + good radiator + oem fans should be more than adequate for just the street. That's really all i ever ran on my turbo cars, never had an issue. The only time i had an issue was when i had a dumb and used Mishimoto fans. Then it would get hot on the highway.

Concealer is right, according to my experience. Except, while not using A/C, no fans are needed above 50 mph, maybe lower, even with the condenser in the stack.

This is with less HP (about 230), but stock fans, ducting that bypasses some air around the FMIC. Street. 37mm Koyo radiator, which is not a good as that SM.

On track, only running 175 WHP, and good for that as well.

Volvo fans are AWESOME.

available in 99% of junkyards. love using those in my chump cars.

I really like it. I can see the hot air coming out of my hood vents when i stop and the fan controller make it a dream because i dont get the voltage spike on startup. I think the fan was less than $100 new.

I'll add my 2 cents.
SPM crossflow, dual stock fans, AC, R_Theory hood vents (discontinued), no ducting I was able to keep my temps in check (barely). I'd guess 200 whp on wastegate.
