First Miata help

Just picked up a 2001 NB Miata as a weekend toy and I’m looking to eventually turbo it. My budget is around $4k and I’ve been eyeing the CX Racing kit with a Megasquirt ECU. I’m not trying to go crazy on power, just shooting for around 200whp – something fun and reliable.

Before I start spending on boost, I’d like to sort out two CEL codes the car currently has:

P0340 – Camshaft Position Sensor

P0172 – System Too Rich (Bank 1) (you can smell it running rich)

Any advice on clearing these up before moving forward?

Also, if anyone has experience with the CX kit on an NB, I’d love to hear your thoughts. I’ve read mixed things (intercooler piping fitment issues, manifold cracking, etc.), but for a modest power goal it seems like it could be a decent budget option.

Would really appreciate input on:

Best way to fix those codes

CX kit pros/cons for ~200whp goals

Any other budget-friendly turbo setups worth considering under $4k

Welcome to the forum!

This place is the arguably the definitive one-stop-shop for learning all things about modifying and adding power to these cars. There is a plethora of highly intelligent users here that have shared and discussed their experiences at great length. All you have to do is find the right threads. I and many others highly value the advice given here from senior members. I highly encourage you to peruse the build thread section and have a read through some of them. If you're like me and many others here and love the nitty gritty details, you'll find this quite entertaining. But don't stop there! grab a coffee or a beer (or 3) of your choosing and look through the turbo discussion section as well.

What I'm getting at is this: after looking through a few build threads and turbo related discussions, you won't find much talk of the CX racing kits. Rather, you won't see much praise of the CX racing kits. What you will find is that when boosting these things, there's a couple of tried and true options - MKTurbo, FM, and Kraken. For your budget and power goals I would highly advocate for the MKTurbo kit. This kit is fantastic for an easy button 200-220hp. The vendor, Lars, is a very active member here as well. I've personally ran his kit for 25k miles at 230hp with zero kit related problems. The only problem I had recently is the compressor housing bolts backed out over time and the blades contacted the housing. I emailed Lars, sent a comical $150 for a new turbo and it was at my door 4 days later. I'm rambling, but definitely check out what he has to offer. He has a complete kit with injectors and ECU that is just barely outside of your budget. The only extra thing you'd need (I think) is an upgraded clutch if you don't already have one.

When boosting these things I promise you the headaches of cheap kits and corner cutting is not worth it. It's more money in the long run. MKTurbo is the most "budget" I'd be willing to go. These cars at 200-220hp are incredibly fun.

I've had my mk turbo kit since 2017. I've put a bunch of miles on it at 220 whp. No troubles. Everyone I've even heard of has had major issues with the cx kit.
