When installing the front cam caps, the ones that House the seals, is it correct that these two caps need rtv under them and that all other caps do not? The manual seems to indicate this. I am aware that after all caps are installed rtv needs to be used around the front and rear caps for valve cover seal. Here is a picture for reference.

Also if unbolting the front cam caps there is no need to use any seal install tool correct? Just slip the new seal in? Does the outer part of the seal need light rtv or oil? I have heard of both methods. Thanks.

i installed my seals without RTV, just some oil to guide them in smoothly. As for the caps, I think RTV may be too thick and could mess with bearing clearances. I think flange sealant would be a better solution, but I’ll let more experienced folks chime in.

The manual simply says silicone sealant. I wonder why the manual says to put it under there if in fact it doesn’t have it from the get go.

Hmm. Interesting. Maybe I will simply use an extremely light coat and then do the corners for the VC like normal. Based in the design of the cap, it seems like a small amount under would help prevent leaks, but if the valve cover corners are done correctly with rtv, then it really wouldn’t matter either way. If anyone else has any input or experience on this please chime in.

Also, is there any difference in the normal black rtv vs. the OEM Mazda Grey Silicone? Does the Mazda stuff have any advantages not offered by the auto store Black rtv?
