gasket for oil pump to pickup tube/strainer

Soooo I ordered and received a new OEM oil pump from mazda but they didnt include the "oil strainer gasket" or O-ring. At this point I wish I would have went with the Melling pump on Rock auto for the same price which would have come with the gasket and O-ring. Ok, rant over. I'm wondering if a gasket is necessary or if I could use a thin layer of black (ultra oil resistant super fabulistic) RTV instead. I know its only a $3 gasket but shipping from Mazda Motorsports on the gasket makes it stupid expensive. Or should I just cut my own? Open to Suggestions, I really want to finish my rebuild and close this guy up so I can break it in before the race.

I think I am going to go this route, I want to keep this build moving. I have a race coming up soon.

Go pick it up from a mazda dealership. If you fuck it up, put a wrinkle in it, or that chunky RTV gets pressed out post strainer, or whatever number of reasons to cause some trouble, you get to pull that motor and do it all over again.

20/20 hind sight, should have done it right with the pump and all gaskets....don't let this be another 20/20 moment. But hey, it's your downtime, just do post up when you have low oil pressure so future folks will know exactly what not to do.

Looks like the standard Mazda gasket set does not include the strainer gasket, at least not the part# that GoMiata sells. I've seen a few posts where the lack of this gasket has come in. Well, I assumed I had it in my gasket kit while I was breaking out the RTV only to realize that not only does Boundary neglect to include the strainer / pickup gasket, in addition to Mazda!

In a pinch, I learned something that I figure is good to share. After coming up with rocks from local part stores searching for the gasket by itself: a "Front Crankshaft Seal Kit" sold by Fel-Pro, PN# TCS 45921 (among a couple of others, depending on motor / year) includes the strainer gasket, $9, carried by most auto part stores. So, there is a quick solution, rather than waiting a couple days from an ebay seller or Mazda dealer- especially on a Sunday.
