Going boost very soon, what should I upgrade as well
My current motor is had bad rings and instead of rebuilding it my buddy said he would sell me his whole set up because he is going LS. This is a list of the goodies!.. 1.6L pushing 14 psi. The motor made 276 on MS1 and has 1.8 11 pound flywheel, stage 3 clutch, Big oil cooler and relocation kit. Toyota cop. Coolant relocation kit. Hks bov. Precision intercooler, s4 turbo kit gt 2871r. Wiseco pistons 9.0 to 1 with Eagle rods. ACL racing bearings. Big port head and very mild cams.
With that being said this is my daily driver and it needs to be reliable. I plan on turning the boost down until I pick up a 6 speed tranny and I'm not going to be romping on it everyday. Just want something fun for spirited driving. I know this set up is over kill for what I plan on using it for, but its too good of a deal to pass up. The main reason he is selling the set up is because he was eating through trannys left and right because he was hard on the car while it was running and instead of replacing the tranny with a built one, he is going to swap an LS into the car instead. The build has 7k miles on it. Since I know pushing a substantial amount of power compared to stock is going to cause things to break easier, what are some things I should go ahead and replace or upgrade asap. I plan on running 210ish hp for now Thanks in advance for any help or advice! |

I'm assuming you have a 90-93 miata. If its any other year. Dont buy that setup because putting a 1.6 into a 1.8 chassis is ignorant.

I have a 96 with the 1.8 lol. And ill gladly down grade to a smaller motor putting out good numbers.

Take rods from built 1.6 and put them in your 1.8. Sell pistons and manifold and turbo (because the 2871 is the WRONG turbo for 210hp) and buy 1.8 manifold and T25 or T3 Churbo. Most everything else can be reused.

It's only staying at 210 until I pick up a stronger transmission, once I put one in ill bring it back to 14psi

How much is he selling it to you for? How bad are your rings, were you turbo already? No one here is going to condone putting a 1.6 in a 1.8 chassis.

My biggest concern at the moment is getting the weaker, more prone to breaking parts fixed now before I start pushing 220+ power. I'm not planning on tracking this car seeing as it's on air struts currently. My overall goal is for a good looking car that's fun to play around with from time to time. |

This motor was not boosted before, I just ended up getting screwed when I bought the car 6 months ago because the guy failed to mention it had a bad motor (no signs showed It had a bad ring when I originally purchased it). He actually showed me the receipt for the purchase of a re-ring kit 3 months prior to selling the car. |
On a '96, you don't need to change anything driveline wise to handle 210-250HP. Assume the stronger clutch comes with the swap.

I personally am not completely against swapping to a 1.6 if the situation calls for it. In your situation it doesn't seen like too bad of an option considering the motor is built to handle whatever you can throw at it. I've never heard of anyone having tranny issues at 250whp especially since you will be 230+/-wtq with that setup reliably. On the other hand obviously a 1.8 is the way to go for obvious reasons but if you want to swap a 1.6 in temporarily until you can fix the 1.8 I say go for it. Then you can swap over rods and save there, and part out the 1.6 to recoup some costs

Of all the n00bs that used the excuse "swap this xxxx in til I can afford to xxxx" how many reported back later and said " I finally got the money/time to do xxxx so here I go"? Very very few. How many actually did it? Very very few. You know why? Because most are lazy and cheap/poor. So in reality most should stop using the stupid excuse and just accept the fact that most likely whatever crap they decided to use/go with will be more or less permanent. I'm just saying |
Yeah I figure OP will never go back to 1.8 if he swaps in the 1.6 especially since the 1.6 is already built. Plenty of people run the 1.6 boosted some build the 1.6 too. To each his own. If OP wants to go 1.6 and it's already built I say go for it. You'll be making more power than me with my stock 1.8 and similar power to the majority of the people on this forum at the sacrifice of a couple hundred rpms later spool.
