Got the 01 engine installed in my 97' but it runs like hammered dog shit...

I got it installed, but damn it runs like crap. I can't get it to hold a smooth idle its either WOT or the engine hesitates and dies. It feels like a vacuum leak. I really need some help to see if anybody has had issues with this install before.

I am using the 94-97 intake manifold with 04-05 Mazdaspeed Miata purple top injectors. could this be causing an issue.... Any advice please?

Stealth97 11-20-2010 09:24 PM

uh how'd you get the '97 manifold on there if you are using the '01 head?

Yeah, this is your entire issue. The '94-97 intake manifold does not bolt up to the '01 ports. In addition, the fuel rail mounting bosses are different, so if you're using the '94 fuel rail on the car the fuel injectors are crooked and leaking.

I figured so... its the intake manifold cause I had issues getting the injectors to seal off. Well if I am going to use an NB style intake manifold I might as well get this bitch going returnless.

I knew it, I argued with myself, but had a light bulb go off that told me I bet its the damn angle of the injector that is different. Thanks guys, now back to work...

I have a feeling he wouldn't take that offer of yours.

Unless he fill's the trunk of that MSM with a lot of cash.

Cody,
I have a return system that I used on a RX8 that would work for you....I thought you were using the 01 manifold?? Give me a call monday at the shop if interested in the return system..

Stealth97 11-21-2010 06:39 PM

silly MSM's

Well I got a 01 intake manifold from my buddy Tom out at partsgroup. He gave me a 01 fuel rail as well, but he told me that in order to use the return fuel system of the 97 with the 01 intake manifold on my car, I may have to use a 99-00 fuel rail. (Its all due to the position where the pressure regulator bolts on...)

Anybody had any luck getting the 01 fuel rail to work with the 97 return fuel system. It'll give me a heads up on what to expect when I install this tomorrow!

The 01 fuel rail will not work at all. The return FPR hits the head or some nonsense. You will need the one from a 99/20, but there are actually 2 different ones. You want the one that had the FPR flange at the very end.
That is a picture of the one you want.

I used the 01 fuel rail in my 96 car.

However I soldered a 90deg barb to the FPR outlet and remotely mounted the 96 FPR in the engine bay (it sits where the carbon cannister would've been).

Initially I modified a 96 fuel rail to fit, but it was a horrible hack job and quickly changed it.

i was looking at mine last night on my 02 engine with a 92 FPR...

i started bending the leg of the FPR all over but it looked dumb, so this was the solution i thought of to use.

My other solution was going to be build a new rail out of extrude from ross machine racing and use an external FPR.

Yes, got me a 99-2000 fuel rail for 26 dollars. Damn cheap and I removed the 97 manifold yesterday and voila when I actually shined the light down there the top portion of the ports are exposed to free air, I couldn't believe I didn't catch this before. I am more than certain this car is going to run smooth when its all said and done.... One last question?

Should I use 99-00 maroon injectors, or 01-05 (MSM) purple top injectors?
