Harmonic Damper
I am in between the ATI harmonic damper and the Super Miata harmonic damper is there anyone that can provide me some feedback on both dampers

Cheap, light, effective = 949 BHJ supermiata damper.... race proven on many, many cars....... just got mine, hurry because stock's flying from the shop

BHJ has a race version that only has one pulley, and is made of steel. It is not cheap.

I notice that its a press fit.why do they do that?,im assuming the tool to fit and remove it is expensive?

You also have to consider what engine management are you using? Are you running vvt? Running sequential fuel and spark? How many teeth on the trigger wheel for crank sensor? All those things can also play into the choice of which to go with. I know with the MS3x if you want to run VVT and sequential fuel and spark you have to either run the FM 36-2 wheel or the stock 4 tooth wheel. So watch out for that when making a choice.

Because a bolt-on damper would be like equipping a purpose built factory team road course race car with wal-mart brand all-season passenger tires. Installation tools start at around $50. If you use a hammer, make sure you use the claw end so that the next guy you sell it to can see why it failed. |
I just pressed mine back on with the bolt. It literally only presses onto the crank like 3/8". I pulled it with the bolt style puller and it was on there pretty good. Not like the stock one that you can just wiggle off by hand.

I was saving for the ATI when the SuperMiata came out. It was unproven at that time but I trust 949 and bought it on the initial run special price offering way back. It's making a great paperweight in my garage. I hope to have the car running in 60 days or less........ha maybe......
The math says that it will make the motor slightly more responsive because it's lighter than stock. I don't believe that was one of the goals but it ended up being a side effect. I wanted reliable pulse damping and believe I will have it. Plus it sure looks good, I just wish it was 949 Orange.... I chose it based on price & 949's reputation. |

Took awhile to get my SuperMiata Damper due to production delays, but I'm very happy with it so far. I ordered the on car crank holder tool just to make life a little easier and had no problems getting everything installed.

So the Super Miata Damper seems the way to go, the installation has me a little worried but I think its better that way at least I know I would not have to worry with the bolts. ;) This plus BE billet oil pump and some extras and I am almost done gathering parts

ATI damper can be rebuilt.
Plus the R&D on the ATI unit is really good. A TON of people use them over very many applications. |
