well i used to work at a place in northford CT, near new haven. Its called Kehltech Performace, The owner has done some miata heads, as well as working with me to do the fully built head on my BP.

He can do race port work and is setup to flow heads on a superflow flow bench.

Nothing you do to that head will be as cost-effective as swapping to a '99 head. Just FYI

Sav is right, if your gonna put money into building a head for performance, then a 99+ head is what you want. If your just rebuilding because it needs some freshening up then thats a different story.

i was just doin it to freshin it up but i would like to put the vvt head on but idn what i need. i know a vvt controler/ecu and the head and headgasket obviously but idn if there are any other parts i would need. never messed with vvt before. any info on it would help alot

You'd also need the oil feed tubes that run from the oil pressure sensor to the vvt solenoid, cams with vvt actuator and you will need to wire in the vvt signal. Also a 99+ intake manifold. Any 1.8 exhaust manifold will work.

All said and done, freshening up your old head will be in the $500-$800 range (machine shop labor, gaskets, valve stems and seals, other misc. fluids and whatnot). I went against the grain, insisting that I could make my '95 1.8 work better. All I did was toss time and money into my pit.

The only thing that I would pay a machine shop to do on a 94-97 head would be to make sure it is flat, and to change the valve stem seals. Other then that you are honestly wasting money.
