Help ID 1.8 motor year/parts please

Long story short, I bought this motor to swap into my 92:

EBAY LINK

And it showed up with a broken valve cover and some broken sensors.

Thankfully the VC was broken on the timing belt side so I decided I would just shave that side off and run exposed cam gears like some of the people here do. Problems is I have no idea why my motor has this sensor on the front as I haven't seen it on other 1.8Ls:

Is this specific to certain years and something I'll ditch since I'm keeping 1.6 wiring anyhow? Perhaps I'm jumping the gun asking this question since I haven't pulled out the 1.6 out of the old car yet, I wasn't able to find anything on search though. Thanks in advance for any help and flames :noob:

99-00 valve cover and CAS. You won't use it if you're keeping 1.6 electronics, but if you decide to run a decent ECU that will take the superior NB sensors, then you'll need it (and the intake cam gear behind it). I recommend you keep it.

People still cut everything but the metal around that sensor, never liked it cause it always looks like its gonna break off, but if you wanna get rid of the cracked part, you can. Just leave the sensor.

Aww balls. Listing had it as a 94-97 so that's what I was prepared for for my swap. Any easy way to ID this 100% as a 99-00 motor and not just one with that v/c? Here's a shot that may or may not be helpful, the link in my original post has pretty good pics though too.

I'll keep the newer sensors around as the long term plans include a MSPNP. If I understand correctly, I'm swapping in pretty much all the sensors from my old 1.6 right? I've read FM's tech article but some of the things are a little vague, like how you mount the CAS to the back of the exhaust cam?

I think you got a '99 with a 6spd, don't be disappointed, you've got a great engine, assuming you can tackle the proper wiring.

Do you mind telling us what you paid? The transmission alone is worth $600-$800.

It appears he paid $1100 shipped, which is a freaking steal for that.

Wow. I thought this was a bad thing and now it's turned good. Dealing with the wiring is more than a fair trade off for this tranny.

Started playing with the shifter and nope...no "reverse" lockout because that's 6th gear :D

The actual reverse is way over and feels like it takes a pretty good amount of effort to get into, is that pretty normal? I have an s2000 and I'm used to having to press the shifter down then it goes over easy.

I actually only paid $1000 shipped after negotiating with the seller before I bought it. :)

Can anyone link me to a good article or thread detailing a little more than FM did for getting the 99/00 motor in?

Also, drive-shaft from my 1.6 rear still slides in no problem right?

EO2K 03-03-2013 01:39 PM

Can you get a pic from the intake side, that includes the top of the maifold? Does that downpipe have 2 outlets at the flange, right below the O2 sensor?

I'm also about 98% sure that is a 6 speed.

Maybe that's a J/EU/UKDM style BP4W? (not a BPZ3 because no VVT?)

I might be interested in that manifold/heatshield/egr tube, if you aren't using them. :bigtu:

Edit: Damn, I'm like really slow on the draw this morning

I had a buddy come over and one thing he pointed out is that the 1.8s he's seen, even 99/00 have raised lettering on the VC whereas I have recessed still.

Here are the shots of the tranny, intake manifold, and a couple markings I found:

I'm very new to modding miatas and definitely can't tell the year the year differences yet, so I appreciate how responsive everyone has been.

Oh and EO2K, the EGR tube is missing, but I'm going turbo around June so the manifold and heatsheild will be available. I'll keep you in mind when that time comes. Possible sooner, I may just throw an eBay header on there in the meantime.

TorqueZombie 03-03-2013 03:03 PM

You definitely got a killer deal on that set up. I have a '99 motor and that trans in the garage and that is what you have pics of. However, if you want to sell off the speedo I'd be happy to take it off you hands. Mine got broken at the yard.

? His 1.6 car is cable speedo right? Doesn't need the electronic 6sp one right?

EO2K 03-03-2013 03:07 PM

Yep, that looks like the VICS manifold on my BP4W, good stuff there.

BP5A, there we go! That's the one we didn't get in this country. It may not actually have EGR, IIRC markets outside the US didn't get that. Depending on where you live and what your emissions requirements are, this may get you in trouble at inspection time. (except that maybe the 1.6 also has no EGR? I'm not real familiar with the 1.6, sorry)

USDM:
99/00 = BP4W (w/VICS)
01/05 = BP6D (w/VVT & VTCS)

J/UK/EUDM: (IE: rest of the world)
99/00 = BP5A (w/VICS)
01/05 = BPZ3 (w/VVT & "square top" manifold)

BP5A will have a better intake cam, better exhaust manifold, no EGR, etc. Its rated something like 10-15hp higher than the US spec BP4W

What are your ECU plans again? You really should look into stand-alone management for this thing. Adapting the 1.6 stuff will work, but I doubt it will be nearly as fun in the end.

Edit: Cable spedo on the 1.6? Yeah, spedo is going to be an issue...

Also, start shopping for a diff/housing/axles from a 1.8. You WILL destroy your 1.6 rear with this engine. The 1.6s rears are known to explode under stock power... good news is that I believe any 1.8 driveshaft will work for you. Research that though

blaen99 03-03-2013 03:12 PM

You got a BP5A with a 6-speed for a grand shipped?

You are one lucky SOB, OP.

I know, right? I'm looking at $800 for a 6 speed out my way. Fuck this guy!

1.6 had recessed lettering on the VC, raised for the '94-'97 1.8, and recessed again for the 2000 1.8. IIRC.

Recessed was reintroduced in 99-00, yep.

pdexta 03-03-2013 08:29 PM

Nice buy, you're lucky you didn't post that here before the auction ended!

JEMERY 03-03-2013 09:01 PM

Yeah this is BullSHIT. I bought the same engine, literally same listing. We will see what arrives tomorrow. I will be refusing shipment.

Corporate Hippie 03-03-2013 10:05 PM

Thanks for all the info people, especially EO2K, didn't know that what I got was so sought after. It's definitely going to be more work with what showed up broken and figuring out the wiring/speedo/etc but I have another car to drive in the meantime.

Jeremy, that IS bullshit. I bought the engine a couple weeks ago and wondered why they didn't pull the listing. Figured maybe as as engine dealer they had more than one in stock or something.
