High horsepower build
First off I wasnt too sure where to start this thread so if its in the wrong spot I apologize, moderators feel free to move it.
This winter I am looking to go all out on a turbo build for my 1993 Miata. -I am looking to make 350-400whp reliably -run E-85 -have a 8,000rpm redline -have it fairly free reving and responsive if possible I understand the weak point will be the drivetrain in which I have picked up a 6-speed trans and a 3.9 rear end from a 2001 miata with 80k. Also i'm aware to achive 350whp, some of the things I include in my build may seem like over kill but like i said I want to build it reliably and be able to give it a beating from time to time without worring about blowing it up. I am leaning towards using the Aem Ems for engine management unless someone can presuade me otherwise. (hydra, megasquirt) I wanted to share with you guys my build that I am planning for and would like some feedback on what i can expect, what to avoid, what not to do, the best route, so on and so on. Motor: I plan on purchasing a built motor from Trackspeed Engineering which consits of -Supertech forged pistons (plan on using 8.6:1 for higher boost) -Manley forged H-beam connecting rods -ARP2000 Rod Bolts -ACL Race main, rod, and thrust bearings -ARP head studs -ARP main studs -Boundary Engineering "Street/Strip" oil pump with billet gears -Supertech Viton valve seals -Gates Racing timing belt -OEM Mazda seals and gaskets -Full cylinder head refresh (hot tank, new manganese/bronze valve guides, 3-angle valve job, pressure test, and resurface) -supertech valve spring kit -kelford 272 intake/exhaust cams(not sure yet) -Begi intake manifold -Begi 70mm throttle body Turbo kit: FM 2 GT3071R turbo kit 3" exhaust Fuel: FM Big fuel kit ID1000cc injectors Clutch/flywheel: FM supersize clutch or supermiata twin disc clutch Ignition: Trackspeed coil on plug kit or FM big spark kit Does anyone have a setup that comes close to this? what kind of power can I expect out othis set up? hp/tq Thanks, Sam |
So let me just get something straight: did you purchase any of this yet or is this just a wet dream at this point? Or is this just another "what would this setup make hypothetically?" type of thread?
Sorry not trying to be a downer but we get like 100000 noobs in here every day with cool lists like this and wet dreams of having some hardcore boner inducing miata only to just disappear in a week or two. |
I'm with him. ^
You're going to need more than just what looks good on paper. If you are in fact loaded, and have a ton of money burning a hole in your pocket first you need to do is send me $1000. Do the build slow. Plan ahead for big power, but do one thing at a time. PS: 250hp 2000lb Miata is no slouch. |
Hey no worries, glad you asked that. Its a long term build, its a plan. This is my parts list and ive been putting money away for this build for a while now. As of right now I have the tranny and rear end. By november I plan on purchasing the motor. I am in no means in any rush to get this done but am very determined to. My goal is to have it done by next fall. Basically this thread is to see if I should change items in my setup so later down the road I dont make costly mistakes.

Well in that case, here's an extremely condensed list of pointers:
-trackspeed motor is great -no real need for the cams unless you want crazy topend or much more than 400 -fm2 log sucks and you should go with an awesome tubi from absurdflow or artech. in fact scratch the whole FM2 altogether and go all out with previously mentioned fabricators' hotside parts. they are 200% better for the same cost -not sure what the fm big fuel kit consists of but I bet you can make a better one yourself for less money using the info on this site -fm level 2 will be good to about 300-350, past that you need the ultra baller twin everything else is not bad. biggest advice is this: READ READ READ. The amount of info and build threads we have on here you could literally build the coolest setup without asking nearly any questions |
To make this kind of power, you need to use a Borg Warner S366 turbo.

 OMG that just made my night

The amount of info and build threads we have on here you could literally build the coolest setup without asking nearly any questions straight from FM's website-GT3071R turbocharger This turbo is much larger than the standard GT2560R. It also has much higher power capabilities. However, the larger size makes it slower to spool. Recommended for cars with stroker engines or with very high power goals. We tried the GT2860RS (the infamous "Disco Potato") and weren't all that happy with the results. We kept looking and found that this hybrd worked better. Definitely not recommended for 1.6 motors. Maximum power approximately 400-450 hp at the wheels. This is a $200 option. and FM's Big fuel kit- The fuel pump is a 300 liter/hour DeatschWerks unit. An adjustable AEM fuel pressure regulator mounted on a custom bracket lets you run either fixed or manifold-referenced pressure. The high-flow filter can be disassembled and cleaned. A -6 (3/8") line allows for lots of volume to the engine - that`s about 43% bigger than stock. The fuel rail is FM`s own high flow dual feed unit. All the lines are braided stainless steel with AN fittings for a secure connection and easy serviceability. The fuel pressure regulator is mounted in the same location as the stock fuel filter so it`s protected and you only have one large line running up to the engine bay. Completely compatible with E85 fuel. I have been doing LOTS of reading but its always nice to get others opinions ;) |

I was talking about the log, not the turbo lol. The turbo is nice, but you can achieve 350-400 with the 2871 and have much better torque under curve.
and the big fuel kit sounds decent, but I'm almost afraid to ask the price, based on what FM usually retails stuff for. worst case you can piece it together yourself and save money. Stuff like the dual feed rail isn't really needed on our cars. At least not at those power levels. |

Ahh I see lol I was confused for a sec. will def. look into that The fuel kit is just shy of $800 Any idea on how much boost I would have to run to make that kind of power? |

Ever driven/riden in a high hp miata? PLans for the car? Street/track? Reliable is a fun word, but its also pricey, and if/when you start making 400whp you will see what I mean. |
ALLOFIT
But seriously: There isn't a set number. Pressure shows restriction of flow, nothing more. That's why I always laugh when kids on the street ask me: " HOW MUCH BOOST YOU RUNNIN DAWGGG?"

I was planning on running allofit. Thanks for confirming guys! I'm a former owner of 500hp GSX and a 400hp srt4, I have some experience in going fast and breaking shit...just not with Miatas...but I can't wait too!!

Call me on Monday and we can chat about your goals. There are a few parts on that list that I'd change.
|
i agree 100% with you 18psi about the absurdflow and artech. and dc2696, that has to be the funniest tag ive ever seen. tur bro lolol.
but this build will be awesome to watch. please take pictures of the build. im looking to do something very similar with my miata. i have about 2.5k saved up. and im going to start working on it before august is over. my goals are not quite as high. my highest goal would be 325whp. so it wont be as extreme as i hope this thread will be. |

- you want LS coils for big power. Cops are good but LS coils are so, so much better. And same price if you DIY.
- I think the FM big fuel kit is extremely retarded. They put the FPR before the fuel rails and in general their fuel diagram makes no sense to me. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1345393370 WAT Also I basically have everything for 400whp, except fuel. |
