How To Resurface a Flywheel

I need to replace the clutch, and I want a “new” clutch surface on my flywheel so the clutch will operate problem free.

The first step is to have the flywheel cleaned of oil , grease and grime.
This flywheel is in decent shape minimal warp and few hot spots

I found my Ford Dark Blue Spray Paint!!

Next is to mount the flywheel to the machine
Move the flywheel under the grinding stone, and touch off….

Each pass is only .002 -.003 deep per cut

See the sparks?

Now that we have a good surface for the clutch disc to mate too…

One last thing to do is to knock in the pressure plate alignment pins

All done…

Why no coolant? Aren't you risking warpage?

BogusSVO 04-18-2012 12:53 PM

maiter Thanks!

rleete.... This was the common set up used in 1964 (when this piece of equipment was made)
Coolant was not used then, that came into use in the lat 70's early 80's

This machine does not generate enough heat to warp the flywheel, the most you can cut at once is .003, so on top of being old, it is slow.

Modern coolent flywheel grinders can cut appox .010 in a pass and generate way more heat than the one I use.

With the old and slow Van Norman, as soon as the grind is done, you can grab it with your bare hands, so it is no where close to being to a temp to cause warp.

With all of these processes do you mind listing the hi/lo/avg. range of cost associated with each job? I know i'll pay way more in Canada but it gives me and others a good idea on what to budget for.

BTW I really get a lot out of these tutorials/info posts!

Where the hell did this dude come from? All these threads are awesome!

Someone should send him a Miata and he can make a Haynes style tear down and build up and document it here. I would send one but with the exchange rate and customs and all well you know....

Elesjaun.... Thank Aaronc7, he is the one that brought me over to your fourm. I am helping out on his build.

Landrew.... just to make you feel better, I am half Canadian on my mom's side.
The exchange rate is not all that bad at this point in time, about 3% the last time I checked a few months ago.

When I was younger, I used to holiday up in Wasga beach. Go to the EX, and do the great slide ride.

Are their any anciliary, household uses for this piece of equipment?
