Ignition retard with Intercooler

Hi to all

You can find a litle description of me and my car on the meet and greet page:

https://www.miataturbo.net/meet-greet-40/mecanical-parts-under-pressure-55408/

I already read the tread that Braineack wrote "things to do before turbocharging your miata" witch gave me allot of helpfull information.

Problem is as folows:

I got a 1991 MX-5 with a Greddy Turbo, no IC

My plan is to put an IC, then another ECU (fully programable) and so on...

Do I have to change the ingition retard timing when just adding the IC?
Or would I be better of to wait until I put the new ECU and then mount the IC?

I whas reading in the above mentioned thread were it said to go from 6° static to 8° static, unless if there is Ping

What is the reason for this extra 2° retard?

Therefore I think it might be better to put the ECU with te wideband Lambda first?

What do you guys think about that?
Regards
Mark

Adding an intercooler to your current setup won't hurt anything.
If anything you can advance a degree or two.

Definitely get the ecu and have it properly tuned by someone that knows what they're doing (no offense but it sounds like you know next to nothing).

You will be able to gain a lot of power with fmic, proper engine management, and bigger injectors.

You're right, I have allot of expierience on pure mechanical builds (mainley motorcycles) but the Turbo scene is completelly new to me!

The reason why I want to put the ECU first is to have a visual on the engines parameters (knock sensor, wideband, MAPP) Am I wrong about this??

But I'm learning!!! ;)

The ECU is something I'm going to get done by someone who has a tuningshop and has loads of expierience, he's suggesting me to buy a KdFI (runs the same software as the MS) but is factory build (He sais its better quality and has more options than the MS at a lower price):

http://www.scribd.com/doc/25023384/KdFi-English

Do you know this?

Reverant 02-06-2011 07:11 AM

Avoid the KdFi at all costs. It is a counterfeit megasquirt product and you will NOT get ANY support for it from the creators of the Megasquirt firmware or from the Megasquirt community in general. By the way, it costs ~400EUR and its not plug and play. You can get an official Megasquirt, that will be plug and play for your car and to your spec, ready with a basemap, for slightly more.

Were are you from btw?

I'm from Belgium...

I can have one in Holland for 259euro, seems like it is allot cheeper than the MS.
The tuner where I'm buying it also sells the MS...

He tells me the MS is a DIY-kit and therefore when badly assembeled not good!

I'l go snooping around some more, and try to find another tuner to get information over other products

You can buy the MS with a standard basemap as PnP?? I didn't know that

Reverant 02-06-2011 07:24 AM

The one that costs 259 euros is just the board. It does not include a proper enclosure (box), wiring, plugs, sensors (you need an IAT and a TPS), etc. Once inside a proper enclosure it costs 389 euros and it is STILL not plug and play nor does it come with a basemap for your car.

Ok , very interesting...

So you think I should do this?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MegaS...Q5fAccessories

So I just have to get the Standard ECU out and plug this one in and drive??

Once I have it instaled, can I still change the programs??

Help me out here what is an IAT and a TPS ?

I thought I needed A MAPP sensor(Vacuum) and a Wideband Lambda (O2), but I dont know the ones above

Reverant 02-06-2011 07:39 AM

That would be a good choice, although it is the older MS-1 processor.

Do some reading in the MS sub forum.

AIT is air intake temperature. You can use the one built into the stock AFM (air flow meter) or drill and tap some threads in your intercooler pipes and screw it in.

TPS is throttle position sensor, and you don't need it. Vacuum changes with throttle position, so the MS can use those vacuum values for it's accel enrichments.

Again, so some reading in the MS subforum, specifically the stickies.

Saying that you don't need a proper TPS with the MS is like saying, yeah, you can run a Greddy kit with an AFPR.

NOT.

Ok Thanks! Cristal clear! We use other abrieviations (I'm Dutch speaking!)

I'l do some reading in the MS sub forum

Super forum by the way, loads of usefull information

I'd love to hear why I need it. I have VTPS, and so far I've heard that without MSII, there's not much the MSI can do that can't be done as smoothly as map based accel enrichments. Which of course I hadn't heard until I bought and installed one. Which made sense to me, as I had ran my setup with out any TPS perfectly fine.

So please, do enlighten me.

urrrr a retard

Reverant 02-06-2011 12:17 PM

It has do with the fact that you can't have a precision tune based on the map/mapdot alone. Then again, I can't imagine people not running an idle valve, and there a bunch of people here not running one.
