Jacking up the motor with a Jack to change motor mounts
Hello everyone.
Got a question. I would like to change motor mounts on my 1.6. I don't have a hoist so is it possible to just Jack the engine up with a floor Jack? I would put a piece of wood and maybe a piece of carpet to make sure I don't dent anything. Is this a BAD idea or someone done this before? I am really sick of my engine shaking like crazy when warming up and I practicaly can't shift to second above 5k, it's always a misshift. |
That will be fine.

Good to know. Where should I position the Jack? Should I remove any pieces from the engine? Like coil pack? Any other things need to be loosened? Thanks again.

a piece of 2X4 under the oil pan, make sure it wont get in the way of the subframe when u jack it up.

just did this...use a board

Great. Are the mounts bolted to the engine too?

Consider these in the "definitely fucking hand thread before tightening" category. That is unless you want to retap holes in the side of your block you can barely get to. Use a lot of extensions and go in from wheel well...it's about like trying to penetrate hustler's sister. |
Awesome. |

Awesome. I couldn't figure out, or didn't have the right tools to loosed that inside nut on motor side of mount before pulling assembly out. Was hell to loosen it once the piece is free. |
Good write up. So I guess I will have to remove the mani and downpipe to get to the drivers side motor mount, right? If I absolutly have to do it, there is no way I am doing this until winter time.

I didn't remove any turbo hardware.
Go in through wheel wells. EDIT: But I don't have A/C or PS...which is how I got the damn thing out after removing bolts through wheel well. |
I do have power steering but no a/c compressor.

When re-aligning the engine to the mounts prepare to be frustrated.
I threw a screw-driver through the wall, and cursed loudly. |

God I'm looking forward to this. PS, AC, turbo stuff, coolant reroute, limited skills, quick temper, not enough beer. Damn this won't be fun.

i will try to have a friend help.

Yeah, the realignment is a real fucking bitch. Jack up front of motor...jack up back of motor....pull on intake manifold...fuck!
That's why I stressed threading those bolts in by hand. You WILL be tempted to make it flush by getting threads started...and you WILL cross thread one this way since you'll be using a clusterfuck of every extension you and your neighbor own to get in there around fender, control arms, fender liner, starter and clutch lines. Be patient. |
i did mine at work using a dead man jack. much easier to control than a floor jack, maybe try a scissor jack for best control
