judging Valve events on miata heads
I would like to set my cam timing but cant see any reliable way to get an indicator on the valve bucket. Does anybody have a method for doing this?
I've used a leak down gauge to determine valve openings but that gives a "just off seat event" which is reproducible but doesn't compare to any published reference point. |

Dial test indicator on top of bucket. Measure from 0.050" to 0.050".

That test indicator is probably more precise then you need for measure when the seat is fully closed or open, try this:
Summit SUM-900016 - SummitŪ Magnetic Base and Dial Indicator Kits you'll also be able to use it for measure backlash on diff gears, setting bearing tolerances and loads of other things. It has a 1" range while the test indicator, although precise down to .0005" (some go to .0001") it only has a .1" range. |
you guys missed the part where he can't get a reliable place to read on the bucket...

Oh, right. Try the cam lobes.

Thanks, I may be able to get the test indicator in there. Ill try when I have the cover off next. I couldnt see any way to get anything that shoots straight at the bucket.
If I profile the cams then I can probably extrapolate the .020 opening event from when the seat first lifts. Thats a lot of work though. |
